You can set up Google Home and control many compatible smart devices without buying a separate, dedicated smart-home hub. The catch: device requirements vary. Google’s Seamless Setup works only with supported products and requires a compatible Google speaker or display, or a Nest Wifi point. Matter devices have separate hub requirements, and Thread devices need additional Thread-capable hardware.
What “without a dedicated hub” means
A dedicated smart-home hub is separate hardware used to connect or coordinate devices. Some products that work with Google Home connect directly over your home Wi-Fi, so you do not need to buy a standalone bridge or hub for that setup. Google’s Seamless Setup can also add certain supported devices without using the maker’s app.
This does not mean every device works with only a phone, or that every product can be set up without extra hardware. Seamless Setup lists a Google smart speaker or display, or a Nest Wifi point, as a prerequisite. Matter uses a different setup path and requires a Matter-enabled Google Home hub.
Check what you need before setup
For Google Home generally
- A Google Account and home Wi-Fi.
- The Google Home app on a supported phone or tablet. Google’s general requirements page currently lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later; setup and app use are not supported on a computer. Google’s general requirements
- A device that is compatible with Google Home. Look for the Works with Google Home or Matter mark, then check the exact model’s setup instructions. Support and setup order vary by product. Google’s smart-device preparation guidance
For Seamless Setup
- A supported Google smart speaker or display, or a Nest Wifi point.
- A compatible device that specifically supports Seamless Setup, with the Google Home app updated.
- For Wi-Fi devices using this flow, AP isolation must be turned off on the router. AP isolation can prevent devices on a Wi-Fi network from communicating with one another. Google’s Seamless Setup instructions
For Matter devices
- A Matter-enabled Google Home hub is required to add Matter devices.
- A Matter device using Thread also needs a Thread Border Router. Matter over Wi-Fi uses your home Wi-Fi network instead.
- IPv6 must be enabled on the home Wi-Fi network for Matter to work properly. Google’s Matter setup instructions and Matter network preparation
Google lists different minimum phone software for its Matter-specific workflow than for general app requirements: Android 8.1 or later with Google Play services 22.48.14 or later, or iOS 16.5 or later, on the Matter setup page. Use the requirements for the setup path you are following and check Google’s live instructions, since requirements can change.

Set up Google Home and add a compatible device
- Install or update Google Home. On a supported phone or tablet, install the app or update it to the latest version, then sign in with your Google Account.
- Create or select your home. Open Google Home and follow the prompts to create a home or choose one you already use.
- Prepare the device. Plug it in, power it on, and follow its manufacturer’s setup instructions. Check whether it should be added in Google Home before, during, or after installation; some products require the maker’s app.
- Add it in Google Home. In the app, follow the on-screen prompts to add the device. The exact labels and sequence can differ by product, so use its current Google Home setup instructions if the app’s prompts do not match.
- Keep the device near the router during setup. Google recommends placing it roughly 15 to 20 feet from the Wi-Fi router for a smoother setup. Google’s setup preparation guidance
Use Seamless Setup when the device supports it
Seamless Setup is an option for specific supported devices, not a universal Google Home setup method. If you have the required Google speaker or display, or Nest Wifi point, and the device is marked as supporting Seamless Setup, use this flow:
- Update the Google Home app and confirm AP isolation is off on your router if the device uses Wi-Fi.
- Plug in and turn on the supported smart device in the same room as the Google speaker or display.
- Open Google Home and follow the prompt to add the device.
Google says this supported flow does not require a bridge, hub, or device-maker app. If the device does not appear, check that its model supports Seamless Setup and consult its product-specific instructions. Google’s Seamless Setup instructions

Choose the right path for Matter
Do not assume that a Matter label means a product can be added without hub-capable hardware. Google requires a Matter-enabled Google Home hub for Matter devices. The connection requirements then depend on whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Thread:

If setup does not work
- The device is not offered in the app: Confirm that the exact model is supported by Google Home and, if you expect Seamless Setup, that the product supports that flow. Follow the device’s own instructions; some products must first be installed in the manufacturer’s app. Google’s device preparation guidance
- A Wi-Fi device cannot be found during Seamless Setup: Check that the app is updated, the required Google speaker/display or Nest Wifi point is available, and AP isolation is turned off on the router. - A Matter device will not connect: Verify that you have a Matter-enabled Google Home hub, IPv6 is enabled, and—if the device uses Thread—a Thread Border Router is available. Google’s Matter setup instructions
- The app or setup prompts differ: Check Google’s current requirements and the exact device’s setup article. Google documents different phone OS minimums for general setup and Matter, and product setup sequences are not identical.
