To prepare a 3D model for printing, first make sure its geometry describes a sound, enclosed object; then set up and inspect the sliced job for your specific printer and material. A model that looks right on screen can still contain holes, zero-thickness surfaces, or other defects that lead to missing or unexpected printed features.
1. Check that the model is a printable solid
Before exporting, inspect the model for holes, unjoined vertices, non-manifold edges, reversed normals, self-intersections, stray internal geometry, and features with no thickness. A mesh should describe an enclosed volume, with connected faces and outward-facing surface normals. Defects can prevent a slicer from interpreting the shape correctly or produce geometry you did not intend.
Construction planes and sketches are not printable solids by themselves. Convert them into solid geometry or add thickness: as Formlabs puts it, “A feature without thickness cannot exist in 3D space.” Check that thin features are thick enough for the process, printer, and material you plan to use.
2. Repair defects, then check the repair
Fix accidental defects in your modeling tool or use a slicer’s mesh-repair feature where appropriate. Automated repair is helpful, but it can reconstruct damaged areas incorrectly. Keep an editable copy of the original and compare the repaired geometry with your design intent; a success message alone does not confirm that the model is still correct. Formlabs’ model-preparation guidance discusses both repair and feature thickness, while Prusa’s model repair guide explains mesh issues relevant to slicing.

3. Export in a format your slicer accepts
Choose an interchange format supported by the slicer you intend to use. PrusaSlicer 3.0.0 lists 3MF, STL, OBJ, STEP/STP, and SVG among its supported input formats, but compatibility varies among slicers and releases. Confirm the current list in your chosen slicer’s documentation before exporting. Prusa’s first-print guide describes importing a model and preparing it for a printer.
After import, check that the model appears at the expected size and shape. If the slicer offers a project format that retains setup information, use it when you need to preserve that work; do not assume that every export format carries the same project or material settings.

4. Configure the job for your actual printer and material
Select the printer configuration that matches the machine you will use, including the correct nozzle where applicable, and choose the intended material. Then place the model on the build plate, set its scale, and rotate it into a suitable orientation. Choose a print intent or profile and adjust resolution and other settings to fit the part and its purpose. UltiMaker’s S-series setup workflow, published October 14, 2025, covers printer and material selection, model adjustment, slicing, and preview.
Choose orientation for supports, surface, and strength
Orientation affects which faces touch the build plate, where supports may be needed, how visible surfaces look, and—in FFF printing—how the part handles forces. Arrange load-bearing features with the intended load direction in mind, and consider whether support contact will mark an important surface.

Prusa gives 45°–60° as a cleanly printable overhang range depending on nozzle diameter and settings. Treat that as a vendor rule of thumb, not a universal limit: results depend on the printer, material, and configuration. Prusa’s design guidance for 3D printing explains overhangs and other model considerations.
Do not assume one wall thickness or clearance fits every printer
There is no single minimum wall thickness, clearance, or tolerance established for every printing process and setup. Use guidance for your printer and material, and make a small test print for parts that must fit another component. A test can reveal whether your chosen settings and geometry deliver the fit you need before you commit to a larger or more costly print.

5. Slice the model and verify the printer output
Slicing converts the model and selected settings into instructions for a particular machine. Prusa’s beginner guide identifies G-code or BG-code as output types; confirm which one your printer accepts. A correct model alone is not enough if the job is configured for a different machine or material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Inspect the layer preview before printing
Review the sliced job layer by layer before sending it to the printer. Check that the object is in the expected position, supports are sensible, and no obvious gaps, missing sections, or unexpected features appear. PrusaSlicer provides a layer slider, while UltiMaker’s preview offers line-type and gap views; UltiMaker recommends checking the print strategy before starting.
