Microsoft documents separate settings and language support for these features, but its public guidance does not explain the technical reason every app behaves differently.
Which Windows 11 typing feature are you using?
Start by identifying how you are entering text. Windows documents different controls and capabilities for physical-keyboard suggestions, the touch keyboard, and the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK). A language-specific input method, such as an Indic phonetic keyboard, is another distinct case.
- Physical keyboard: Windows has a text-suggestions setting for typing on a hardware keyboard, plus a separate multilingual text-suggestions option.
- Touch keyboard: Its available functions vary by language. For example, Microsoft says swipe typing is not available in every language, and some layouts are unavailable for some languages.
- On-Screen Keyboard: This accessibility keyboard has its own documented prediction feature. Microsoft lists English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish for that feature; this list does not define language support for other Windows suggestion features.
- Language-specific input method: Some keyboards convert phonetic typing into suggestions in another script, rather than providing general text prediction.
Because these are separate features, enabling suggestions for one input method does not establish that another will show them.
Check physical-keyboard and multilingual suggestions
- Open Settings > Time & language > Typing.
- Turn on Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard.
- If you type in more than one language, check whether Multilingual text suggestions is enabled as well.
Settings labels can change between Windows releases. Microsoft describes suggestions as predictions based on spelling: “Words are predicted based upon your spelling; as you type more letters, new and more accurate suggestions appear.” (Microsoft Support: Enable text suggestions in Windows.)

Check the language and keyboard layout
A Windows display language, a preferred language, and a keyboard layout are related but different settings. The display language controls the Windows interface, including Settings and File Explorer. Preferred-language order can affect the language used by Microsoft Store apps and websites: the first language supported by an app or site is used. A keyboard layout determines which characters a physical keyboard enters; an alternate layout can provide characters that are not available on the current one.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm the language you intend to use is installed.
- Check the keyboard or input layout associated with that language and select the intended one.
- If a particular input method needs language components, open that language’s options and check its installed features. Adding a keyboard layout does not always require installing the full matching language pack.
Installing a language, changing the interface language, and selecting a layout are not interchangeable fixes. Microsoft’s language and input settings guidance explains these Windows options.

Why a suggestion may differ between apps
Microsoft’s instructions suggest trying text suggestions in a Teams chat, a Word document, or a browser comment. Comparing ordinary text fields in more than one app can help determine whether a difference is limited to a particular context.
That comparison does not reveal the implementation behind the difference. Microsoft’s public support material does not establish that Windows must show identical suggestions in every app, that a particular app blocks suggestions, or that a specific app uses a particular prediction engine. If settings, language, layout, and input method are correct but one app still behaves differently, consult that app’s documentation or support rather than assuming Windows has a universal app-by-app rule.

Touch-keyboard behavior depends on language and device context
Touch-keyboard capabilities are not uniform across languages: Microsoft notes that swipe-based typing is not available in all languages and that certain layouts are unavailable in some languages. If the touch keyboard behaves unexpectedly, review its settings and check the device’s mode and whether a physical keyboard is attached. Microsoft’s touch-keyboard guidance describes its options; Microsoft also points users to Feedback Hub when unwanted behavior occurs in a specific app or situation.

Windows provides Indic phonetic keyboards for 10 Indian languages: Hindi, Bangla, Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Odia, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. They let you type phonetically and offer possible text options in the relevant script. Microsoft says their transliteration rules are based on ISO 15919; its example is typing “namaste” to receive Indic-script suggestions. This is a language-specific input method, not evidence about the scope of general physical-keyboard prediction.

- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and add or select the relevant language.
- Open that language’s options and check whether Basic typing is installed.
- If needed, download Basic typing, then select the language’s phonetic keyboard for input.

A practical way to narrow down the cause
- Suggestions are absent on a physical keyboard: Verify the physical-keyboard text-suggestions toggle and, for multiple languages, the separate multilingual option.
- The wrong characters or language appear: Check the active keyboard layout and installed language, not just the Windows display language.
- Touch-keyboard options are missing: Check language support, touch-keyboard settings, and device mode or keyboard attachment.
- Only one app or text field differs: Compare a Teams chat, Word document, or browser comment, then check the app’s own documentation. The comparison can localize the difference but cannot identify the app’s internal cause.
- You are using an Indic phonetic keyboard: Check that the relevant language’s Basic typing feature is installed and that its phonetic keyboard is selected.
