You can build a credible technical-writing portfolio before you have a paid writing role. Use C tutorials to demonstrate subject knowledge, then add a few other document types to show you can explain procedures, answer reference questions, and help readers troubleshoot. For every sample, make its audience, goal, technical environment, authorship, and verification status clear.

What to put in a C-focused technical-writing portfolio

Choose a small, deliberate set of work rather than publishing several versions of the same tutorial. Three to five distinct pieces can be a useful self-directed starting plan; it is not an employer requirement or a guarantee of hiring results. Google recommends varied sample types and suggests open-source documentation contributions for applicants without professional experience.

Sample What it demonstrates Details to make clear
Compile and run a first C program A beginner-friendly, outcome-focused tutorial Operating system, compiler, prerequisites, build command, and expected output
A focused concept tutorial, such as functions, arrays, pointers, or input handling How you explain one idea and build examples progressively Reader’s assumed knowledge, scope, and how examples relate to each other
A task guide for splitting a small program into source files Procedural instruction and explanation of compilation and linking Files to create, commands to run, and the resulting program
A concise command reference or troubleshooting page Information organization and support for readers who need a quick answer Which compiler or environment the guidance applies to
An open-source documentation contribution Work in an existing project and collaboration with its documentation Link to the change and a precise account of your contribution

This is a menu, not a checklist. Pick pieces that complement one another and that you can finish and explain well. Google also offers guidance on sample code and technical-writing courses at Becoming a Technical Writer at Google and Technical Writing Courses for Engineers.

Define the reader and the result before drafting

Give each sample a named audience and a concrete task. “Learn pointers” is too broad to set expectations. A more useful brief might say that the reader already understands variables and functions, uses a named compiler, and will be able to pass an address to a function in a small program.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

State prerequisites near the beginning, then tell readers what they will accomplish. Google’s tutorial exercise asks writers to choose an audience and gives readers who know C or C++ but are learning another language as an example. The principle applies in either direction: familiarity with a programming language does not automatically mean familiarity with a specific tool, task, or concept. See Exercise 4: Tutorials.

  • Audience: Identify the reader’s relevant experience, such as new to programming, new to C, or familiar with C but new to this task.
  • Goal: Describe an action the reader can complete, not just a subject they will encounter.
  • Assumptions: Name prior knowledge, tools, files, and permissions the steps depend on.
  • Scope: Say what the tutorial covers and avoid implying that an example applies to every compiler or operating system.

Make the C environment reproducible

C instructions can depend on the compiler and build environment. Name the operating system and compiler family, and give a version or language dialect when it matters and you know it. Include prerequisites, filenames, the exact command to build or run the example, and the result a reader should expect.

For example, Microsoft’s C documentation separates a command-line compilation tutorial from compiler, language, build, and runtime references. That is a useful model for separating a first-run path from deeper reference material. The Microsoft C documentation describes Microsoft’s toolchain; do not present its steps as universal C instructions.

The GNU C Language Manual explicitly covers GNU C. It discusses pointers and the care needed with memory use, as well as building larger programs from separately compiled modules and linking them. When a sample relies on GNU-specific behavior or tools, label that scope. When teaching a broader C concept, distinguish the language idea from compiler-specific commands or extensions.

Treat every code example as part of the instruction

A code block is not self-explanatory. Explain what files to create, where the code belongs, how to run it, and what output or result indicates success. Keep examples focused, use names that help readers follow the logic, and explain any non-obvious technique rather than asking readers to infer it.

  • Check that the sample is correct for the toolchain and scope you named.
  • Keep it concise enough to support the point, but include the context needed to use it.
  • Make examples understandable and reusable where appropriate.
  • Give an expected output or describe the observable result.
  • Only say that you tested code if you actually ran it; if you did, state the environment and what you checked.

These practices align with Google’s Creating sample code guidance. A command and expected output help readers verify their own run; they are not evidence that you ran the code yourself.

Structure tutorials so understanding builds step by step

Start with the outcome and prerequisites, then arrange the explanation in the order a reader needs to perform and understand the task. Use one main idea per section. In a longer tutorial, outline the sequence before drafting and make headings describe the content readers will find there.

  1. Introduce the task and say what the finished result will be.
  2. List prerequisites and identify the compiler and operating system in scope.
  3. Explain the simplest necessary concept or action first.
  4. Build examples in manageable increments, explaining what changed and why.
  5. Show how to run the completed example and identify the expected result.
  6. Point to a sensible next step or a relevant reference page.

Google’s guidance on organizing large documents recommends outlines, hierarchical headings, and moving from simpler material to more complex material. Apply that progression within a tutorial as well as across a set of related samples.

Make the origin of each piece explicit. Label a self-directed tutorial as your own sample, identify any work contributed to an open-source project, and do not imply that a practice document was commissioned or adopted by the product’s maintainers. If you write an independent guide about a product that already has documentation, describe it as an independent sample and make clear that it is not official. Link to the original project when relevant, respect its license and attribution requirements, and explain your own contribution.

Present each sample so a reviewer can assess it quickly

For each portfolio item, provide a short description with the information a reader needs to judge its relevance and scope:

  • Title, intended reader, and task answered.
  • Assumed knowledge and document type, such as tutorial, task guide, reference, troubleshooting page, or conceptual explanation.
  • Compiler, operating system, and version or dialect where relevant.
  • A link to the rendered document and, when available, its source.
  • Whether it is an original sample or a contribution, with a concise description of your role.
  • What you actually checked, including whether code was run and in which environment.

This format is a practical way to make authorship and technical boundaries legible; it is not a prescribed portfolio standard. Do not claim a sample was tested, published, or used by others unless that is true.

Build the portfolio without a paid writing assignment

If you do not yet have professional samples, create self-directed documents around real, bounded reader tasks. You can also look for an open-source project’s documentation issue or contribution process and submit a change that fits its guidelines. Google specifically recommends open-source documentation contributions as an option for people without professional experience. Keep the contribution linked and describe exactly what you wrote or revised.

There is no established portfolio length that guarantees an interview or job. A few carefully scoped pieces that demonstrate different kinds of documentation are more informative than a larger set whose audience, environment, or authorship is unclear.
