Google Street View can help you compare the visible layout and character of real-world locations from your desk. Use it to collect visual references—not to confirm current conditions, access, measurements, or permission to reuse imagery.
1. Find candidate locations in Google Maps
Search for a place or area in Google Maps, then open Street View where imagery is available. Google’s Street View coverage overview uses blue areas to show coverage; zoom in to inspect availability at greater detail. Coverage is not universal, so an empty result does not establish what a place looks like.
Street View imagery may be Google-owned or provided by contributors. Attribution identifies the source, and Google says its own imagery receives automatic blurring of faces and license plates.
2. Inspect each location with a consistent checklist
Move through the view as if you were approaching the location, and record what is visibly useful to your project. Keep observations separate from assumptions: Street View shows what the camera could see when it passed, not a verified site survey.

- Approach and street layout: Note visible routes, junctions, apparent street width, and how the location connects to surrounding streets.
- Scale and context: Record building frontage, neighboring structures, vegetation, and the apparent relationship between the site and its surroundings.
- Visual landmarks: Note distinctive shapes, signage, sightlines, and other visible details that might help establish a scene or orient a player.
- Unknowns: Flag anything the imagery cannot establish, such as exact dimensions, current access, what lies beyond the camera’s view, or whether a feature is still there.
For example, “a narrow-looking street with a visible corner sign in this capture” is a grounded visual note. “The road is exactly this wide” or “the building is open to the public” is not something Street View alone verifies. An optional field notebook can help organize comparisons, but it is not needed to use Street View.
3. Compare candidates without turning impressions into scores
Use the same observations for every candidate so you can compare them on useful creative attributes and identify what still needs checking. These are your own scouting criteria, not Google ratings or measured scores.

| Comparison point | What to record | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Approach and street configuration | Visible routes, junctions, apparent layout, and the camera’s view toward the location | Exact dimensions, safe access, or whether a route is currently open |
| Scale and surroundings | Apparent building scale, frontage, neighboring structures, and vegetation | Survey measurements or details hidden from view |
| Visual landmarks | Distinctive visible forms, signs, and sightlines | Whether those details remain unchanged today |
| Image date and apparent period | The date shown for the imagery and any visible clues relevant to the scene’s look | A precise date for every feature or a complete history of the location |
| Open questions | Items to verify through current sources, an owner, an authority, or an on-site visit | Permission, current condition, or legal rights to use the imagery |
4. Check when the imagery was captured
Street View is not real time. Google says imagery may be months to years old by the time it has been collected and processed. Treat visible details as dated references rather than reports of present-day conditions. Check the date associated with the view where it is shown, and keep that date with your notes.
5. View older imagery in Google Earth when available
Google Earth can show historical Street View imagery for locations with more than one available capture date. The timeline only offers dates available for that location.

- Multi-GNSS support gives access to multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS) to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- Open the location in Google Earth and enter Street View.
- Choose the history or “See more dates” control.
- Select one of the dates displayed on the timeline to view that capture.
Compare the visible changes between available captures, but do not treat the timeline as a complete record. If no older date appears, that only means no older view is offered there; it does not prove the location did not exist in the past. Google’s historical Street View guidance describes the timeline and date selection.

Before traveling, planning production at a site, or making a claim about access, confirm consequential details using current sources and contact relevant property owners or authorities as needed. Street View depicts what its camera could see at capture time; it does not confirm present access or grant permission to enter.

Viewing imagery for research does not itself establish the right to copy it into a released game, film, publication, or other creative work. For Google Maps Platform Customer Applications, Google’s Maps Platform Terms of Service require applicable attribution and restrict scraping, rehosting, and creating content from Google Maps Content. The terms that apply depend on the project and how the imagery or related content is used, so check the current terms and obtain permissions as appropriate before incorporating material.
Google describes Street View as imagery from public roads in ordinary cases, with select partner-arranged exceptions, and provides a way to report imagery that should be protected. Its Street View privacy information explains those points. Public visibility should not be taken as permission to reuse an image.
