If Apple Podcasts stops playing, downloading, or syncing after an iOS update, first check whether the problem affects one episode or every show, then test your connection, an offline download, and your Podcasts settings. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem: Apple’s published guidance does not identify a specific iOS update as the cause or provide a Podcasts-specific update-regression fix.
First, narrow down what is failing
Before changing settings, identify the scope of the problem. These distinctions help you decide which checks to try; Apple does not publish an update-specific diagnostic decision tree.

- Content: Does playback or downloading fail for one episode, one show, or every show?
- Playback mode: Does a streamed episode fail, a downloaded episode fail, or both?
- Devices: Is the library or play position wrong on one device, or between an iPhone and another device?
Check Apple service availability and your connection
If episodes will not load or downloads are stuck, check Apple’s System Status for an issue affecting your region. Then confirm the iPhone can load a website. Apple’s general Apple services troubleshooting guidance includes Apple Podcasts and recommends checking the network when content stops downloading.
If other websites also fail to load, the connection is a useful place to investigate. If websites work and Apple reports no service issue, continue with the offline test; neither result by itself identifies the cause of a Podcasts problem.

Use an offline episode to separate streaming from playback problems
- Download an episode in Podcasts while connected to the internet.
- Open Library > Downloaded and select that episode.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data, then try to play it.
Apple documents that downloaded episodes in Downloaded can play without an internet connection in its iPhone guide to listening to podcasts. If the downloaded copy plays but streaming does not, focus on connectivity or service access. If the downloaded copy also fails, the available Apple guidance does not establish whether the episode, app state, or an update-related issue is responsible.
Review automatic-download settings and missing episodes
On iOS 18 or later, open Settings > Apps > Podcasts and inspect Automatically Download. If an episode seems to disappear after listening, check whether Remove Played Downloads is enabled.

Check settings for a specific show
- In Podcasts, go to Library > Shows.
- Touch and hold the show, then tap Settings.
- Review that show’s automatic-download choices.
- If automatic downloads are paused, open the show and choose Resume Automatic Downloads or Turn On Automatic Downloads, as shown in Apple’s guide to finding and playing podcasts.
Automatic downloads are designed to run in the background when a device is charged and connected to Wi-Fi, according to Apple Podcasts for Creators. Settings, show preferences, and device conditions can affect when a download begins; in some cases it may start after you open the app. That explains why a download may be delayed, but it does not prove that every stalled download is expected.
Check Sync Library and the Apple Account on each device
On iOS 18 or later, go to Settings > Apps > Podcasts and confirm Sync Library is on. Make sure the iPhone and the other device are signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple says podcast information that syncs includes followed shows, channel subscriptions, stations, and current play position.

For devices running iOS 17 or earlier, Apple’s guide to syncing podcasts across devices gives the path as Settings > Podcasts. If sync is enabled and the account matches but information still differs, Apple’s documentation does not establish the cause.

The official guidance cited here does not establish deleting Podcasts, resetting network settings, signing out, erasing the iPhone, or reinstalling the app as a guaranteed fix for a problem that starts after an iOS update. To make the problem easier to diagnose, note the exact iOS version and iPhone model, what fails, whether it affects one episode or all Podcasts content, whether a downloaded episode plays offline, and whether another device is affected. A problem that begins after an update may be related to it, but timing alone does not establish that connection.
