Yes. An ESP32-S3 can communicate over USB through a USB-C connector, but USB-C is the connector format—not a feature built into the chip. The S3’s USB data lines are GPIO20 (D+) and GPIO19 (D−). For a custom design, you also need correct USB-C configuration-channel (CC) termination, USB 2.0 wiring, suitable board power circuitry, and a controller/PHY setup that fits your use. On a development board, check the schematic and port labels: a USB-C socket may connect to native USB or to a separate USB-to-UART bridge.
What USB functions does the ESP32-S3 support?
Espressif documents two USB interfaces on the ESP32-S3: a full-speed USB On-The-Go (OTG) peripheral and a USB Serial/JTAG controller. Both can be exposed through a USB-C receptacle, but they serve different purposes. USB-C does not determine which interface the board uses.
| Interface or route | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB Serial/JTAG controller | Hardware-based serial console, firmware flashing, and JTAG debugging. | Fixed-function; it does not act as an arbitrary USB device class. Espressif USB Serial/JTAG documentation. |
| USB-OTG peripheral | Supports broader USB device and host applications. | Shares a PHY with USB Serial/JTAG, so both controllers cannot use the same PHY simultaneously. Espressif USB device documentation. |
| USB-to-UART bridge | A separate board-level chip converts USB from the connector to UART signals for the S3. | It is not the S3’s native USB interface; the board schematic identifies the route. ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 documentation. |
Which pins carry USB data?
For the ESP32-S3, GPIO20 is D+ and GPIO19 is D−. Espressif’s current hardware design guidelines recommend reserving 22/33 Ω series-resistor footprints on the data lines and optional capacitor footprints to ground, with these components placed close to the chip. Follow the chosen module’s or board’s layout guidance rather than treating those footprints as a substitute for a complete USB design. See Espressif’s ESP32-S3 Hardware Design Guidelines.
What hardware do you need for a custom USB-C connection?
- ESP32-S3 chip or module: Route GPIO20 (D+) and GPIO19 (D−) to its USB data interface.
- USB-C receptacle: Use a receptacle wired for USB 2.0 device operation. Follow its full pinout and reference circuit, including the duplicated USB 2.0 D+/D− pins that support reversible insertion.
- CC termination: Espressif’s USB-C implementation article specifies a 5.1 kΩ pull-down for host recognition. A receptacle design must treat CC1 and CC2 correctly; use a complete reference schematic rather than copying a partial connection. See Espressif’s ESP32-S3 USB-C implementation article.
- Data-line components and layout: Reserve the recommended 22/33 Ω series resistors and optional capacitors, placing components close to the chip as described in Espressif’s hardware guidelines.
- Power input and circuitry: Design for a suitable 5 V input and the module and peripherals’ requirements. Regulator, protection, and power-path choices depend on the load and whether the board is self-powered. Do not assume the connector provides negotiated USB-C or USB Power Delivery power.
- Firmware and PHY configuration: Match software and hardware to the interface. USB Serial/JTAG serves its console, flashing, and debugging functions; USB-device or OTG applications require a compatible stack and an available PHY configuration.
How do USB-OTG and USB Serial/JTAG share the PHY?
The two S3 controllers share a USB PHY. Espressif says the internal PHY is assigned to USB Serial/JTAG by default. In that configuration, using USB-OTG requires an external PHY; alternatively, the internal PHY can be reassigned using the USB_PHY_SEL eFuse. Espressif’s USB device guidance and USB Serial/JTAG documentation explain the controller functions and PHY constraints. Plan this choice before designing the board, especially if the product needs OTG rather than only programming and debugging.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does USB-C mean USB 3.x or USB Power Delivery?
No. USB-C describes the connector; Espressif documents the ESP32-S3 USB interfaces as full-speed. A USB-C receptacle alone does not provide USB 3.x bandwidth or USB Power Delivery negotiation. Those capabilities should not be assumed for an S3 design without separate, design-specific hardware and evidence.

For a prebuilt board, inspect its exact schematic and port labels before connecting or selecting software. Espressif’s DevKitC-1 documentation distinguishes the chip’s USB port from a USB-to-UART bridge port; the connector shape alone does not tell you which route a particular port exposes.

Compare the relevant points before committing to a board or custom PCB:
- Signal route: native USB Serial/JTAG, USB-OTG, or a USB-to-UART bridge.
- Functions required: programming/debugging, a USB device application, or USB host operation.
- PHY availability: whether the intended controller can use the internal PHY or needs an external PHY.
- Connector implementation: USB-C CC wiring, USB 2.0 data-line connections, and board layout.
- Power design: whether the board’s input and power circuitry suit the module and attached peripherals.
If you want to avoid routing a receptacle yourself, a prebuilt ESP32-S3 development board with USB-C may be simpler; still verify its schematic and the function of each port.
