Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Use Puppeteer’s documented syntax for text, XPath, accessible name and role, or open Shadow DOM; for interactions, prefer page.locator(), which waits for the element and action preconditions. Check selector validity and scope before increasing a timeout.
Why does my Puppeteer selector only work with full CSS syntax?
Puppeteer interprets selectors as CSS by default. A shorthand such as text=Submit or another framework’s role syntax is not automatically understood as CSS. For ordinary elements, use standard CSS selectors: a class starts with ., an ID with #, and an attribute selector uses brackets.
await page.locator('button.submit').click();
await page.locator('input[name="email"]').fill('reader@example.com');
These examples use locator interactions, which are Puppeteer’s recommended approach for selecting and interacting with elements. The syntax and behavior described here follow the Puppeteer documentation surfaced as version 25.12.0; check the docs for the version installed in your project if its behavior differs. Choose a selector that matches what identifies the element
Use CSS when stable attributes or DOM structure identify the target. If the meaningful target is its text, accessible name and role, or an XPath expression, use Puppeteer’s documented selector extensions rather than assuming a shorthand from another framework works.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Selector approach | Identifies the element by | Example | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSS | Attributes and DOM structure | button.submit |
Default selector syntax. Structure-based selectors depend on the relevant markup remaining stable. |
| Text | Text content | ::-p-text(Checkout) |
Matches minimal/deepest elements containing the text; that may be a child rather than the container. |
| ARIA | Accessible name and role | ::-p-aria([name="Submit"][role="button"]) |
Useful when the accessible name and role are the intended contract; those values need to remain appropriate. |
| XPath | An XPath expression | ::-p-xpath(//h2) |
Use when the target is naturally expressed as an XPath path. |
Use Puppeteer’s text, ARIA, and XPath syntax
The current guide documents ::-p-text(...), ::-p-aria(...), and ::-p-xpath(...). These can be composed with CSS in documented cases. For example:
await page.locator('::-p-xpath(//h2)').wait();
await page.locator('::-p-text(Checkout)').click();
await page.locator('::-p-aria([name="Submit"][role="button"])').click();
Text-selector content with punctuation may need escaping. Puppeteer’s guide illustrates escaping parentheses in Checkout (2 items) and quotes in He said: "Hello". Follow the escaping examples in the guide for the exact text and syntax you use rather than assuming punctuation is interpreted literally. Puppeteer selector syntax and escaping examples
How do I select an element inside Shadow DOM?
Ordinary CSS does not cross into a Shadow DOM tree. For an element inside an open shadow root, Puppeteer documents the deep descendant combinator >>> and the immediate shadow-root child combinator >>>>.

await page.locator('custom-widget >>> button').click();
await page.locator('custom-widget >>>> button').click();
The first form searches descendants through the host’s open shadow DOM; the second targets an immediate shadow-root child. The documented guidance does not promise access to closed roots. These combinators work only at the first depth of CSS selectors; they do not behave the same when nested inside CSS functions such as :is(...). Puppeteer Shadow DOM selector guidance
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use locators for interactions and immediate queries when appropriate
A locator is usually the better choice for clicking or filling because it waits for the element and checks action preconditions. Depending on the action, those can include visibility, enabled state, viewport placement, and stable geometry. A selector can match an element and still leave an interaction waiting because the element is not ready.
await page.locator('button.submit').click();
await page.locator('input[name="email"]').fill('reader@example.com');
Use immediate queries when you expect the element to already be present and want to inspect it directly:

page.$()returns one match ornull.page.$$()returns all matches.$evaland$$evalrun a function on the matched element or elements.
For example, await page.locator('button.submit').waitHandle() waits for a locator handle, while await page.locator('button').map(button => button.textContent).wait() waits for mapped results. The interaction guide also documents per-locator timeout configuration and an action event that can help log retrying actions. Use those options to investigate or handle actual page behavior, not to mask an invalid selector.
Why does waitForSelector() time out even though the element appears?
page.waitForSelector() waits for a matching element under its requested conditions. The API reference gives it a 30,000 ms default timeout and documents visible, hidden, timeout, and signal options. A timeout may reflect a syntax or scope problem, or a state condition—not simply a slow page.

- Validate the syntax. Confirm the value is valid CSS or valid Puppeteer-specific selector syntax. A framework-specific
text=or role shorthand is not necessarily CSS. - Check the frame. Confirm the target is in the main frame. If it is inside another frame, query through the appropriate frame locator.
- Check Shadow DOM. If the target is inside an open shadow root, use the documented deep combinator rather than an ordinary CSS descendant selector.
- Check text escaping. If the text selector includes parentheses or quotes, follow the guide’s escaping examples.
- Check state as well as presence. A locator action can still wait because a match is hidden, disabled, outside the viewport, or moving. Determine which precondition is unmet before adjusting locator options.
- Check when the call runs. If the page has not reached the state where the target appears, wait for that state explicitly. Use the visibility options when visibility, rather than mere presence, is what matters.
A timeout of zero disables the waitForSelector() timeout; it does not fix malformed syntax, the wrong frame, or an unmet visibility condition. For the precise option definitions, see Puppeteer Page.waitForSelector() API reference.
How should I migrate legacy selector prefixes?
Legacy text/, xpath/, aria/, and pierce/ forms remain supported, but Puppeteer recommends the current pseudo-element syntax. Legacy prefixed syntax selects one non-CSS type at a time and does not combine multiple selector types. For maintained code that combines selector types, use the current documented syntax and verify it against the Puppeteer version installed in your project. Puppeteer Page interactions guide

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a selector copied from another browser automation framework in Puppeteer?
Only if it is valid CSS or uses Puppeteer’s documented selector syntax. Framework-specific shorthand is not automatically interpreted as CSS.
Can Puppeteer select elements in a closed Shadow DOM?
The documented deep-combinator guidance covers open shadow roots; it does not promise access to closed roots.
