If Windows 11 speech recognition is not recognizing your voice, first identify which feature you’re using: Voice access is the current option for Windows 11 22H2 and later, while Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) is the legacy feature. Then test your microphone in Windows, check microphone permissions, and look for Voice access’s listening and transcription feedback. That sequence helps distinguish a microphone problem from a language or command-recognition issue.
Check whether you’re using Voice access or Windows Speech Recognition
Microsoft says Voice access replaced Windows Speech Recognition for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in September 2024. If you’re using a current Windows 11 release, look for Voice access under Settings > Accessibility > Speech. WSR instructions may not match the feature available on your PC. Microsoft’s Windows voice-recognition guidance explains the transition.
If you’re troubleshooting an older Windows version that still has WSR, use instructions for WSR rather than Voice access. The two features have separate setup and language requirements.
Test whether Windows receives microphone audio
Before changing recognition settings, check whether Windows can record your voice through the intended microphone.

- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you want to use. Check that it is connected and positioned correctly.
- Select Start test, speak normally, then stop the test and play back the recording.
- If the sample is too quiet, adjust Input volume and test again.
If the microphone is missing from the Input list, address its connection and Windows audio-device detection first. Microsoft recommends considering an audio-driver update or reinstall if Windows still does not detect the microphone after other troubleshooting. See Microsoft’s microphone setup and test steps.
Allow microphone access
Windows privacy settings can prevent an app from receiving microphone audio even when the device works in the Sound test. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and check the relevant controls:

- Let desktop apps access your microphone
Desktop apps do not appear in the per-app list for Microsoft Store apps, so check the desktop-app access setting as well. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance covers these permissions.
Use Voice access feedback to locate the problem
In Voice access, confirm the intended microphone was selected during setup and that the feature is actively listening—not in sleep or microphone-off state. Voice access displays a live transcription of what it hears. What appears on screen helps narrow the cause:

- No words appear: Recheck the selected input, microphone permissions, listening state, and whether the microphone works in Windows’ test recording.
- Words appear, but nothing happens: The microphone is capturing speech. Check whether the phrase is a supported Voice access command and consult its command help; spoken text is not necessarily a command the feature can act on.
- The words are wrong: Confirm the selected Voice access language, then consider background noise or difficult names and vocabulary.

Confirm Voice access language and setup completed
Voice access supports specific languages and dialect variants; a language being available as a Windows display language does not by itself establish that it is available or selected for Voice access. Initial setup downloads required language files and needs an internet connection. If setup reports a download error despite connectivity, Microsoft advises checking whether Microsoft Store can reach its app catalog and download apps. Its Voice access setup instructions describe the download requirement.

WSR has its own supported-language list, separate from Voice access. Use the language guidance for the feature you actually launched; Microsoft lists WSR commands and languages in its Windows Speech Recognition commands reference.

If Windows records your voice clearly but Voice access has trouble in a noisy room, open its Improve speech recognition settings. The options include Remove background noise only and Voice Isolation. Voice Isolation requires a brief one-time setup and is intended to focus on your voice amid background noise or other speakers. Voice access can also add specific names or difficult words to its vocabulary. These options refine recognition; they do not fix a microphone that Windows cannot capture. When a different microphone is worth considering
Consider a USB microphone or headset microphone only if the Sound test indicates that the existing input is missing, faulty, too quiet, or unsuitable. A new microphone will not resolve disabled privacy permissions, Voice access being muted, an unsupported language, a failed language-file download, or a phrase that is not a valid command.
