The command_buffer_proxy_impl.cc message is a Chromium GPU command-buffer initialization or communication error. It does not, by itself, prove that headless Chrome has failed. First check whether Chrome exits, hangs, or produces incorrect output; then investigate the GPU path, launch arguments, and any separate fatal errors in the log.

What the error means—and what it does not

Reports commonly show wording such as ContextResult::kTransientFailure: Failed to send GpuChannelMsg_CreateCommandBuffer or the newer Failed to send GpuControl.CreateCommandBuffer. The message indicates trouble creating or communicating with a GPU command buffer. It can appear in headless and automated Chromium runs, but reports across different browser versions and workloads do not establish one cause or a universal repair.

Judge the run by its observable result. In one Puppeteer report, intermittent errors appeared while Chrome reportedly continued working; other reports describe rendering defects or GPU crashes. A line in stderr alone is not enough to conclude that the page, screenshot, or PDF failed. Puppeteer issue #4997, issue #1731, and a Chromium graphics-dev discussion about M125 on Windows document different symptoms and contexts.

Diagnose the actual failure before changing flags

  1. Reproduce the same task. Check whether Chrome exits or hangs, and inspect the page or generated file. If the browser stays healthy and the output is correct, do not treat the log line alone as proof of a broken installation.
  2. Record the environment. Note the operating system, container or CI setup, Chrome or Chromium version, Puppeteer version, exact launch arguments, and whether the workload uses WebGL, screenshots, or PDF printing. The reports span different environments and browser generations, so this context matters.
  3. Inspect the final arguments. Print the complete argument array immediately before launching Chromium. Remove unintended empty strings and malformed values, then rerun the same task. In Puppeteer issue #5737, a reporter traced a particular headless/default-page problem to an empty string created from an empty environment-variable value and passed in the launch arguments. The reporter also said creating a new page resolved their default-page problem. These are case-specific findings, not a general diagnosis.
  4. Look for the first actionable error. Check surrounding output for a GPU-process crash or restart, a fatal error, a shared-memory permission failure, or an application exception. In issue #4997, the command-buffer message appeared alongside a fatal shared-memory permission check; the other failure may be more relevant than the GPU log line.
  5. Retest after a controlled change. Change one factor at a time and rerun the exact workload. Avoid changing several flags, browser versions, and application settings together, because that makes it difficult to identify what affected the result.

Test GPU settings against the workload

GPU-related settings are relevant when the failure involves WebGL, maps, or rendered output, but disabling GPU is an experiment—not a universal fix. It may change rendering behavior, and it may be unsuitable for work that depends on GPU-backed WebGL. A Mapbox report describes trying another Chrome channel in a version-sync context, but that is anecdotal rather than a general guarantee: Mapbox GL JS issue #7721.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Approach When to try it Trade-off or limitation
Keep GPU rendering enabled When the task needs WebGL or accelerated rendering; use it as the baseline for comparison. GPU-process or driver problems may remain visible. Reports include rendering defects and GPU crashes.
Test a GPU-disabled or software-rendering configuration As a diagnostic comparison when the workload can tolerate software rendering. It may not fix the issue and can alter or break WebGL output. Reports include WebGL/PDF cases where GPU-related flag changes did not restore correct output.
Change how the application captures output For a problematic WebGL canvas, compare the failing output method with a screenshot or captured image. A Three.js commenter reported unexpected issues with preserveDrawingBuffer and ultimately used screenshots; it is not a general Chrome repair.
Test a different browser channel or version As a controlled compatibility check when browser and automation versions are mismatched or a specific regression is suspected. Evidence for a successful channel change is anecdotal; it does not establish a broadly reliable fix.

If WebGL, maps, or PDF content is missing

Compare the affected page with a simpler page or screenshot, and confirm that the page has fully loaded before capture. For PDF output, compare the PDF with a screenshot of the same content to distinguish a page-rendering problem from a PDF-capture problem. A preserveDrawingBuffer workaround was discussed for a Three.js PDF case, but the commenter reported side effects and switched to screenshots. See Puppeteer issue #1731.

Common symptoms and what to check next

  • The message appears, but the output is correct: confirm Chrome remains healthy and check for separate fatal errors. Do not change GPU settings solely to silence stderr.
  • Chrome exits or hangs: inspect surrounding logs for the first fatal error, including GPU-process restarts and shared-memory permission failures; verify the final launch arguments for empty or malformed entries.
  • A map or WebGL canvas is blank or incomplete: confirm the page is loaded, compare GPU-enabled and software-rendering behavior one change at a time, and test a screenshot against the failing capture method.
  • A PDF contains a black box where WebGL content should be: compare screenshot output and PDF output, then investigate the application’s rendering and capture strategy rather than assuming the command-buffer message is the sole cause.
  • The issue began after a browser or automation update: record both versions and test a deliberate compatible pairing. A different channel can be a controlled experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
