Check the retailer’s official order page and messages, then contact the retailer through its official support channel. Ask whether the payment is authorized or captured, what is holding the order, and whether it needs anything from you. A pending bank entry may be a temporary authorization rather than a completed charge, so don’t pay again or place a duplicate order until you know what happened to the first transaction.
First, find out what “paid” means
A payment can be authorized without being captured. Authorization reserves funds or credit; capture is the step that charges the customer. Shopify explains that merchants may authorize payment and review an order before collecting the funds, and WooCommerce notes that an order can remain On hold when a gateway authorizes payment but does not capture it. A pending bank entry or payment notification alone therefore does not prove the merchant has received a completed payment.
PayPal likewise says an authorization remains pending until the merchant captures it. In PayPal’s words, “Your account will show a ‘Pending’ authorization until the merchant captures the payment.” PayPal’s authorization guidance advises customers who need cancellation or order-status help to contact the merchant.
Check the order and payment records
- Open the retailer’s official order-status page. Confirm the order number and status, and look for a requested action. Search the email address used at checkout for a confirmation, verification request, or backorder notice.
- Check the bank or payment app. Note whether the transaction is pending or posted/completed. If the app offers a transaction status or details, save that information for the retailer or payment provider.
- Contact the retailer through its official support channel. Give the order number, checkout email, approximate payment time, and amount. Ask whether its records show an authorization or a captured payment; what reason is attached to the hold; whether identity, billing, or payment information is needed; whether inventory is delayed; and when to expect the next update. Never send full card credentials by email or chat.
What may be keeping the order on hold
The wording and process vary by retailer, so only the merchant can confirm the reason for a particular order. These are common possibilities reflected in retailer and platform guidance:

- Payment authorized but not captured: the merchant may be reviewing the order before collecting payment, or its gateway may be set up for authorization without capture. Shopify and WooCommerce describe these authorization and capture states.
- Payment verification or billing details: Office Depot lists card-authorization issues, a billing-address mismatch, and order verification among possible reasons for a hold.
- Inventory delay: Office Depot also identifies backorders as a possible cause, with processing waiting until items become available.
- A temporary hold from a failed payment attempt: Shopify says failed attempts can appear as pending charges and are usually reversed after a short period, with the timing depending on the bank.
- An order/payment record mismatch: the order may be pending or partially paid, or checkout may have been abandoned. If a charge is posted but the retailer cannot find a matching order, Shopify advises contacting the payment provider.
If the retailer cannot explain the charge
Ask the bank, card issuer, or payment service to identify the transaction’s state: authorization, completed charge, reversal, or another status. If the retailer has no matching order but the charge is posted, contact the payment provider with the approximate transaction time and relevant account or order details. This is also the escalation route in Shopify’s guidance for investigating charges.
If you do not recognize the charge, or the merchant cannot resolve it, contact your bank or card issuer using the number on your card or its official app. Follow its process for reporting an unauthorized transaction. Do not retry payment or place another order until the retailer and, if needed, the payment provider confirm what happened to the original transaction.

How long a pending hold may last
There is no universal order-processing or hold-clearance deadline. Provider guidance describes different situations, and your bank or card issuer controls when a displayed hold disappears.
- Shopify failed-payment pending charges: Shopify Help Center guidance says these commonly remain pending for a short time, typically 3–5 days, though timing depends on the bank. Shopify advises contacting Shopify Support if a charge remains more than five business days without an order and the bank cannot identify it. This is guidance for the situations Shopify describes, not a guarantee for every transaction.
- Shopify authorization holds: Shopify says a hold may remain on the customer’s statement for up to 30 days after the original authorization, even if payment was captured or the order canceled. The bank and card issuer determine timing. This describes the displayed hold, not how long an order should take to process.
- PayPal US authorizations: PayPal says orders and authorizations typically expire in 29 days, with exceptions and other authorization terms. This is PayPal-specific guidance, not a general card rule.
These timeframes describe different providers and transaction situations; none promises that a specific order or bank hold will resolve on a particular day.
