To stop Teams from launching when you sign in to Windows, open Teams and go to Settings and more > Settings > General. Under System, clear Auto-start Teams. You can also turn Teams off in Windows’ startup-app list or disable it in Task Manager.
Turn off auto-start in Microsoft Teams
- Open Microsoft Teams and select your profile picture at the top right.
- Choose Settings and more > Settings > General.
- Under System, clear Auto-start Teams.
Microsoft documents this setting in its Teams settings instructions. The exact interface can change as Teams is updated.
Disable Teams in Windows startup settings
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, find Teams, and set it to Off. This prevents the app from starting automatically when you sign in. See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.
Disable Teams with Task Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Task Manager.
- Open Startup apps.
- Select Teams and choose Disable.
Windows Settings and Task Manager show the same registered startup-app list. Task Manager also displays startup-impact information, which can help when reviewing other startup apps.

If Teams still opens or is missing from the list
First check the Teams Auto-start Teams setting and the Windows startup list. These controls cover the documented Teams preference and apps registered with Windows; they do not establish that every possible launch mechanism is controlled by one switch.
If Teams is absent from the regular startup list, Microsoft’s Windows guidance points to the Startup folders in File Explorer. Enter shell:startup in File Explorer’s address bar to open the current-user Startup folder, or shell:common startup to open the all-users folder. Look for a Teams shortcut or other Teams-related entry before changing anything. Microsoft documents these folders in its startup-app guidance.

Stop Teams running after you close its window
Launching at sign-in and continuing to run after you close the window are separate behaviors. Teams can remain active in the background after its window closes. If that is the problem, review the background and close-window controls in Settings and more > Settings > General, in addition to disabling auto-start.

Microsoft notes that startup apps can affect startup speed and background activity. Task Manager’s impact categories are Windows-reported classifications, not a promise of a specific improvement from disabling Teams. Microsoft has not established a Teams-specific amount of time or memory that users will save; see its general Windows performance guidance.
