Color alone is not enough to identify what your smart speaker is doing: pay attention to whether its light is a ring, a screen bar, or model-specific LEDs—and whether it is steady, pulsing, moving, or spinning. On an Echo speaker, a slow yellow burst usually signals a message or notification; on a Google Assistant speaker, white patterns cover listening, processing, and responding. Google’s Gemini for Home patterns differ, so first identify the assistant experience and device type.

Quick guide: identify the device and pattern first

What you see Amazon Echo speaker Google Nest or Home speaker
Wake phrase detected or listening A cyan spotlight on a blue ring means Alexa is listening. Amazon’s brand guidance also distinguishes directional blue for listening. With Google Assistant, four white lights mean it detected “Hey Google” and is waiting for your request; quickly pulsing white lights mean it is listening. Gemini for Home uses a rainbow gradient when the wake phrase is detected and quickly pulsing white lights while listening.
Thinking or processing Alternating blue is the thinking state in Amazon’s brand guidance. A brief blue glimmer can also mean processing or a software update, so use the timing and context. Google Assistant: white lights run left to right. Gemini for Home: purple lights run left to right.
Responding Pulsing blue indicates a response in Amazon’s brand guidance. Google Assistant: continuously pulsing white. Gemini for Home: continuously pulsing purple.
Message or notification A slow yellow burst every few seconds means Alexa has a message or notification. On listed models, one solid white light for about 10 minutes indicates an available notification.
Microphone off Solid red means the microphone button is pressed and the microphone is disconnected. Four solid orange lights mean the microphone is off on listed speaker families.
Setup or connection Orange can mean setup mode or an attempt to connect to the internet. Spinning teal and blue can indicate startup or a restart. Patterns vary by model. Examples include slowly pulsing white when ready to set up and moving white lights while connecting to Wi-Fi or installing an update.

These are not interchangeable color codes. For detailed meanings, use the guide for your exact device and assistant: Amazon Echo speaker lights, Amazon Echo devices with screens, and Google Home and Nest speaker lights. Google also provides a separate speaker-light guide for Google Assistant.

What Echo speaker lights mean

The meanings below are for Echo speakers with a light ring, not Echo devices with screens. Amazon’s Echo speaker support guide describes these indicators; its light-ring guidance adds distinctions between interaction phases.

Blue and cyan: listening, processing, or speaking

  • Cyan spotlight on blue: Alexa is listening.
  • Alternating blue: Amazon’s brand guidance identifies this as Alexa thinking.
  • Pulsing or directional blue: Brand guidance associates this with Alexa responding.
  • Brief blue glimmer: The device may have heard and be processing a request, but Amazon also says it can indicate a software update. A flash by itself does not establish which of those is happening.

A teal-blue bar on a speaker indicates that it is ready for direct speech without the wake word.

Yellow: message or notification

A slow yellow burst every few seconds means Alexa has a message or notification. Ask, “What are my notifications?” or “What are my messages?” to hear what is waiting.

Red and orange: microphone, setup, or connection

  • Solid red: The microphone on/off button is pressed, disconnecting the microphone; Alexa is not listening.
  • Orange: The device is in setup mode or trying to connect to the internet. Check setup or network status rather than treating orange as a single diagnosis.
  • Spinning teal and blue: The speaker is starting up; it may also restart this way after an update.

Green: calls and Drop In

  • Pulsing green: An incoming call.
  • Spinning green: An active call or Drop In.

Purple and white: Do Not Disturb, errors, and volume

  • Purple briefly after a request: Do Not Disturb is on. Purple during initial setup can instead indicate Wi-Fi issues.
  • Quickly pulsing purple: Amazon’s brand guidance labels this an error; slowly pulsing purple indicates Do Not Disturb.
  • White while adjusting volume: The lights show the volume level. Brand guidance also lists cycling white for Away mode.

Echo Show and other Echo devices with screens use a light bar

Do not interpret an Echo Show bar as an Echo speaker ring. Amazon publishes separate indicator guidance for Echo devices with screens.

Google Assistant: white interaction lights

  • Four white lights: The speaker detected “Hey Google” and is waiting for a question or command.
  • Quickly pulsing white: The assistant is listening.
  • Four white lights flashing and fading: It did not recognize a question or command.
  • White lights running left to right: The assistant is thinking.
  • Continuously pulsing white: The assistant is responding.
  • Four solid orange lights: The microphone is off on the listed speaker families.

Gemini for Home: different interaction patterns

Google documents Gemini for Home separately from Google Assistant. Its assistant-specific speaker guide lists a rainbow gradient while the speaker waits after detecting the wake phrase, quickly pulsing white while listening, purple lights moving left to right while thinking, continuously pulsing purple while responding, and four solid orange lights when the microphone is off. Do not apply the Google Assistant white-light interaction chart to Gemini for Home.

How to troubleshoot an ambiguous light

  1. Identify the hardware: Is it an Echo ring, an Echo screen’s light bar, or a Google speaker’s LEDs? Do not use camera or doorbell indicator charts for speakers.
  2. Identify the assistant experience: On Google speakers, determine whether the device is using Google Assistant or Gemini for Home before interpreting wake, listening, thinking, and response patterns.
  3. Observe the full pattern: Note the color, number and position of lights, and whether they are steady, pulsing, flashing, moving, or spinning.
  4. Use the matching official guide: Check the relevant brand and model section, particularly for setup or system patterns that vary by device.
  5. Act on the likely state: For an Echo notification, ask what messages or notifications are waiting; for a Google notification on a listed model, ask, “Hey Google, what’s up?” For setup or connection indicators, follow the device-specific setup guidance instead of assuming the light proves a hardware fault.
