For better privacy on a Pixel 10a, start by reviewing app permissions, lock-screen previews, and Google account controls. For battery life, focus first on screen brightness and timeout, then leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to allow more background activity. The settings below include menu paths and the trade-offs to expect; Google does not publish a percentage gain for changing any one of them.
Review which apps can access your data
Use Privacy Dashboard to see which apps have recently accessed sensitive permissions, then use Permission manager to change access. The exact choices vary by permission and app, but location, camera, and microphone may offer options such as “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow.” Choose the least access that still lets an app do what you need.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy dashboard to review recent permission use.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager to review access by permission type, or select an app in Settings to manage its permissions.
- For an app you rarely use, consider enabling Pause app activity if unused from its app settings.
Google’s Privacy Dashboard and controls guidance and app permission guidance describe these controls. Menu wording may vary with software updates.
Choose how much location access to allow
Location privacy has three separate layers: an app’s permission, the phone’s device-wide Location switch, and Location Accuracy. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

- Limit an individual app: In Permission manager, open Location, select an app, and choose an option such as Allow only while using the app or Ask every time instead of Allow all the time, if those choices are available. Apps that need location only for an active feature usually do not need continuous access.
- Turn off device Location: Use Settings > Location to switch it off. Apps and services then cannot get the phone’s device location, but local search results and ads may still be based on your IP address.
- Review Location Accuracy: In Settings > Location > Location services > Location Accuracy, decide whether to let location services use wireless signals and sensors to improve estimates. Disabling it can reduce precision or availability for location-dependent features.
With Location enabled, permitted apps can access it, and location services can use wireless signals and sensors to improve estimates. Find Hub can also use location to help locate a lost device. Google explains the separate device and accuracy controls in its location settings guidance. Location History and other Activity controls are separate Google account choices; changing an app’s permission does not erase location history already saved to your account. See Google’s privacy controls guidance to review those account settings.
Use the camera and microphone switches for a quick block
For a device-wide pause, open Quick Settings and use the camera or microphone access tile if it is available, or find the controls under Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy. These switches block access for apps and services across the phone. Use Permission manager instead when you want to restrict one app but keep other camera or microphone features working.
A global block can make camera apps, scanning, voice messages, video calls, or recording unavailable until you turn access back on. Google lists the controls but does not quantify a privacy or battery outcome from changing them. See its privacy controls guidance.

Protect lock-screen content and review data-sharing controls
Hide notification details on the lock screen
If someone might see your phone while it is locked, limit what notifications reveal. Open Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and choose whether to show sensitive content or no notifications. Hiding previews can protect message details while still allowing you to see that notifications arrived.

Under Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy, review Google’s Activity controls, Ads, and advertising ID options. These account and advertising settings affect their respective data uses; they are distinct from app permissions.
You can also review Usage & diagnostics in the privacy settings. Google says this sharing can include device performance and usage patterns, including battery, thermal, and component performance, associated with a unique identifier such as the device serial number. Turning the control off governs this sharing path; it does not stop apps or every Google service from collecting data. Details are in Google’s Usage & diagnostics explanation.

Reduce screen-related battery use
The display is a practical place to start. Open Settings > Display & touch and consider these changes:
- Brightness: Lower it when comfortable, or leave Adaptive brightness on if you prefer the phone to adjust automatically.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter interval so the display turns off sooner when idle. Google gives 30 seconds as an example. The Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide states: “Increasing the screen timeout setting from the default setting will increase energy usage and reduce battery life.”
- Always-on Display: Turn it off if glanceable information is not worth keeping part of the screen active.
- Dark theme: Use it if you prefer the appearance; it is a display option, not a guaranteed battery saving for every use pattern.
- Wallpaper: Choose a static wallpaper rather than a live wallpaper to avoid its continuing animation.
For Night Light on the Pixel 10a, Google lists Settings > Display & touch > Night Light. Night Light changes the screen’s color; Google’s cited guidance does not establish it as a battery-saving setting. See Google’s Pixel display settings, battery guidance, and the Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide.
Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on by default
Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization are normally enabled by default. They can reduce background activity for apps you use less often. After setting up a phone or factory-resetting it, Adaptive Battery may need a few weeks to learn your usage before it adjusts fully.

To check which apps use power, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. If one app is draining unusually, inspect its battery usage and background settings rather than disabling optimization for every app. Allowing more background work may improve an app’s responsiveness, but it can use more battery; keeping optimization may reduce performance or delay notifications. Google describes these behaviors in its Adaptive Battery guidance and battery help.

Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are not sharing the phone’s connection. Adaptive connectivity is available on supported Pixel 4a (5G) and later devices, though some US carriers may limit it. The Pixel 10a also offers controls for airplane mode, cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in Settings or Quick Settings.
Switching off a radio can reduce access to networks, accessories, location assistance, or calls and data. Treat these as situational controls—not a reason to turn off every connection as a standing battery strategy. Google’s Pixel battery guidance covers hotspot and Adaptive connectivity.

Support long-term battery health
Keeping the phone cool helps protect its battery. If you usually finish the day with charge remaining, Google’s Pixel battery guidance describes an 80% charge limit as an option for long-term battery health; Adaptive Charging is another option for supported usage patterns. Choose based on whether you value having more charge available immediately or prioritizing long-term battery health.
If capacity or runtime falls significantly and the battery needs replacement, the Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide advises contacting Google, a Google service provider, or an independent repair professional. See Google’s battery guidance and Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide.
