If Stripe’s customer portal opens but a customer cannot switch plans or change a subscription quantity, first check the active portal configuration: plan switching and quantity updates are separate settings, and both are off by default. If the right control is enabled, check whether the particular subscription is eligible, then verify the portal session’s configuration and account scope.
Identify which subscription option is missing
“Subscription options” can mean several different actions. Establish what the customer expects to do before changing settings: switch to another plan, edit a seat or item quantity, enter a promotion code, cancel, change a payment method, or edit billing details. These actions have separate portal features; enabling one does not necessarily expose another.
- For a plan change, check the plan-switching feature and its available destination prices.
- For a seat-count change, check quantity updates and whether the subscription has an editable quantity.
- For cancellation or billing-detail changes, inspect those portal features separately rather than treating them as plan-update controls.
Check the active customer portal configuration
In the Stripe Dashboard, open the customer portal settings and inspect subscription management. Stripe lists “Switch plan” and “Update quantities” as separate options, and both are off by default. Enable the control that matches the customer’s intended action. Exact navigation labels can change, so confirm them in the live Dashboard.
For plan switching, also ensure the intended destination products and prices are offered. Stripe’s current guide says the portal can offer up to 10 products for subscription switching. A customer cannot select a price that is not among the configured choices.

Proration, end-of-period downgrade scheduling, and promotion-code entry are additional settings; none substitutes for enabling plan switching or quantity updates. Stripe’s managed downgrade option attaches a subscription schedule, and scheduled downgrades at period end are limited to prices for the same product. Do not assume it enables arbitrary cross-product downgrades.
For API-configured portals, inspect the configuration used by the session
If your application creates or selects portal configurations through the API, check the configuration actually passed when creating the customer’s session—not merely another configuration visible in the Dashboard. Stripe’s API reference describes the following checks:

features.subscription_update.enabledmust be enabled.- The allowed update types must include the intended operation, such as
priceorquantity. An emptydefault_allowed_updateslist means subscriptions are not updateable. - The configuration must include the intended destination product and price IDs.
See Stripe’s portal configuration API reference for the schema. Its detailed field reference is tagged 2025-03-31.preview, so verify field names and behavior against your account’s API version and SDK before changing code. The API versioning guide says the account default applies unless an override is used; compare the account version, any SDK-pinned version, and the configuration deployed in each environment.
Check whether the subscription itself can be updated
A correctly enabled portal feature does not make every subscription eligible. Stripe documents that the portal can allow cancellation but not updates for subscriptions with these characteristics:
Rank #3
- NO ENCRYPTION FOR DEBIT. NEED PIN PAD TO ATTACH WITH THE DEVICE TO WORK FOR DEBI
- Verifone VX520 terminal with EMV reader, contactless reader, and dual com modem.
- PCI COMPLIANT
- Multiple products on the subscription.
- Usage-based billing.
- A trial offer.
- Invoice collection.
- An unsupported payment method.
A subscription with an update already scheduled through a subscription schedule cannot be updated or canceled in the portal. Look for an attached schedule or pending update before changing portal settings. Where Stripe’s restrictions apply, use an appropriate custom workflow or the supported Dashboard/API management path instead of repeatedly toggling portal features.
Trialing subscriptions have an additional billing consequence
Stripe says customer modifications normally end a trial and create an invoice for immediate payment. Its guide describes a trial_update_behavior setting for continuing a trial. Check that behavior before enabling changes for a trialing subscription or telling a customer what a plan change will do.

Verify Connect scope and create a fresh session
For Stripe Connect, compare the session’s on_behalf_of value with the subscription’s value. Stripe’s portal configuration guide says the portal includes only subscriptions and invoices whose on_behalf_of matches the session value. A mismatch can leave the expected subscription out of view.
Reproduce the issue with a newly created session. Stripe documents that a new portal session expires after five minutes; if accessed within that window, it expires within one hour of its most recent activity. An old or expired link is not a reliable test of the current configuration.

Explain the timing and billing effect of a successful change
Before telling a customer that a plan or quantity change will take effect immediately, check the configured proration and timing behavior. Stripe’s subscription update API reference says price or quantity changes can create proration adjustments. A price switch normally does not change the billing date or cause an immediate charge, except when the billing interval changes or the subscription moves from free to paid. Actual behavior depends on the configured update and subscription details.
Quick Recap
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the affected customer, subscription ID, and exact missing action.
- Inspect the active portal configuration. Confirm the matching feature is enabled and, for switching, that the destination product and price are offered.
- If the application selects a configuration through the API, verify its update-enabled setting, allowed update types, and destination IDs. Compare the API version and configuration used by the affected environment.
- Inspect the subscription for multiple products, usage billing, trial status, invoice collection, an unsupported payment method, or a schedule with a pending update.
- For Connect, compare the session and subscription
on_behalf_ofvalues. - Create a new portal session for the affected customer and test the intended action.
- Before communicating the result, confirm the proration, trial, and timing consequences that apply to that subscription.
