Consider building your own page when customers need a workflow or experience the portal does not cover. A custom page can use Stripe’s subscription APIs, but Stripe’s API documentation does not estimate the application work required.
What each option is
Stripe Customer Portal
Stripe describes the Billing customer portal as “a Stripe-hosted UI for subscription and billing management.” You configure the supported tasks, then create a portal session for an existing customer when they want to manage billing. Stripe says sessions expire if the customer does not visit, so create one when the customer is ready to use the portal. Stripe’s Customer Portal overview and session behavior explains the hosted interface.
A custom management page
A custom page is part of your own application experience. It can be designed around your product’s workflows and use Stripe’s subscription APIs to create and manage subscriptions. Stripe’s API documentation also describes payment behavior and schedules for more complex billing arrangements. The degree of control over the interface is an architectural difference—not a documented measure of implementation cost or effort. See Stripe’s subscription creation API reference.
What the portal can be configured to do
Depending on your configuration, customers can update customer details and payment methods, view invoice history, cancel subscriptions, and make subscription changes. Configuration settings determine which update types are available, when cancellation takes effect, and how proration is handled. Review Stripe’s portal configuration reference and validate behavior against the API version and Dashboard settings used by your account.

#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.

Before enabling changes, decide which actions customers may take and what billing consequences should follow. In particular, choose whether cancellation is immediate or at the end of the billing period, and set the proration behavior for permitted subscription changes.
How to choose between the two
| Decision factor | Customer Portal | Custom page |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow coverage | Suitable when its configurable billing and subscription tasks cover the actions customers need. | Worth assessing when a required workflow is not covered by the portal configuration. |
| Customer experience | Uses a Stripe-hosted, configured interface. | Lets your team shape the application experience; this is an architectural distinction, not a measured Stripe outcome. |
| Implementation basis | Create a portal session for the existing customer when they intend to manage billing. | Build the application page around Stripe’s subscription APIs; the reviewed API material does not give a complete estimate of the surrounding application work. |
| Billing behavior | Configure allowed updates, cancellation timing, and proration. | Design the workflows around your application and the subscription API behavior you need. |
Stripe’s documentation establishes product capabilities, not a comparison of build cost, implementation hours, customer satisfaction, or retention. Estimate effort in the context of your own application rather than assuming either route is cheaper or produces better customer outcomes.

Where customers enter subscription management
Decide whether customers should reach management from an account page or from the purchase journey. Stripe documents ways for existing subscribers using Checkout or a Pricing Table to be routed either to the Customer Portal or to the merchant’s website for subscription management. That lets you choose the destination as part of the broader account and billing experience.

A practical decision process
- List the customer actions you need. Include billing-history access, payment-method and customer-detail updates, subscription changes, and cancellation where relevant.
- Compare that list with portal configuration. Check which actions and billing behaviors you can enable using the current settings for your Stripe account.
- Choose the portal if the fit is sufficient. Create a session for an existing customer at the point they intend to manage billing, rather than relying on an old session.
- Assess a custom page for uncovered workflows. Map those workflows to Stripe’s subscription APIs and estimate the application work in your own stack. As part of that design, investigate authentication, authorization, error handling, and lifecycle synchronization; the reviewed Stripe references do not provide a complete production-responsibility checklist.
- Choose the customer entry point. Connect the selected management destination to the account experience and, if applicable, the Checkout or Pricing Table journey.
