There is no currently documented, shipping Apple smart-home platform called homeOS. Apple’s confirmed offering is Apple Home, built around the Home app, Apple devices, and HomeKit/Matter accessories. Choose Apple Home if your household already relies on iPhone, Apple Watch, Siri, HomePod, or Apple TV; choose Google Home if your devices and routines center on Google Home and Google’s assistant ecosystem. Matter can let some accessories work across both, but it does not guarantee identical features or setup.
Apple Home vs Google Home at a glance
| What matters | Apple Home | Google Home |
|---|---|---|
| Best natural fit | Households using Apple devices and services, including iPhone, Siri, HomePod, and Apple TV. | Households already using Google Home devices and Google’s assistant ecosystem. |
| App and controls | Apple Home app; compatible Matter accessories can also be controlled with Siri, Control Center, and third-party HomeKit apps. | Google Home app and Google’s compatible assistant and device ecosystem. |
| Hub for Matter | Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as possible home hubs for remote access and automations. | A Matter-enabled Google hub is required for setup, local control, and remote control. Thread accessories also need a Thread border router. |
| Network consideration | Check the accessory’s exact Apple Home compatibility and required connectivity. | Google says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. Pairing requires Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher, per Google’s setup guidance. |
| Assistant availability | Siri is part of Apple’s ecosystem; features depend on compatible devices and setup. | Gemini for Home voice assistant is rolling out in early access, so availability depends on region and device. |
These differences are more useful than a universal winner: the right platform depends on what you already own, which accessories you want, and what they can do in the specific app you plan to use.

What Apple’s “homeOS” means in practice
Apple’s documented smart-home experience is Apple Home, not a confirmed shipping product or platform named homeOS. Apple describes the Home app as the place to control smart-home accessories on Apple devices. Its listed home hubs—HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV—can provide access while you are away and enable automations.
Apple says iOS 16.1 and later supports Matter. A Matter accessory added to Apple Home can be controlled through Home, Siri, Control Center, and third-party HomeKit apps. The Matter label alone does not establish that every feature of a device is available in Apple Home. Check the model’s current feature list and Apple Home compatibility before buying.

How Google Home handles Matter
Google says Matter accessories communicate locally over the home network rather than routing commands through Google’s or the manufacturer’s cloud. However, Google still requires a Matter-enabled hub for Matter setup, local control, and control while away from home.
The hub must match the accessory’s connection type. A Wi-Fi Matter device can use a supported Wi-Fi hub; a Thread Matter device needs a hub that also acts as a Thread border router. Google’s current list includes Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K) for Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Compatibility can change, so consult Google’s live hub list before choosing hardware.

Google’s setup instructions also require IPv6 on the home network, Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher for pairing, a current Google Home app, and a supported phone or tablet. The requirements listed on Google’s page are Android 8.1 or later with the specified Google Play services version, or iOS 16.5 or later. See Google’s Matter setup instructions for the current details.
Can the same Matter device work with both platforms?
Often, but verify the exact model and feature set. Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled simultaneously in multiple Matter-certified smart-home apps, including Google Home and Apple Home. That makes it possible to add some accessories to both ecosystems, rather than choosing one platform for every device.

Multi-platform support is not a promise that every control, automation, or manufacturer-specific feature will appear in both apps. Google notes that platforms adopt support for different Matter device categories at different times. Confirm the device’s setup instructions and supported features for each app, especially if a particular function—such as a lock control or sensor reading—is essential to your routine.
Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology. Thread devices need a Thread border router to join the network; Google describes the network as providing mesh coverage and routing resilience. For a purchase, focus on whether your intended hub supports Thread and whether the accessory itself requires it.

- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Choose by your existing devices and priorities
Choose Apple Home if your household is Apple-first
- You want to control accessories from Apple devices and use Siri or Apple’s Home app.
- You already have, or are willing to set up, a compatible HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV when you need hub-enabled remote access and automations.
- The specific lights, plugs, locks, or other accessories you want list Apple Home support and the particular features you need.
Choose Google Home if your household is Google-first
- You already use Google Home devices and want your smart-home controls in that ecosystem.
- You can meet Google’s Matter network and hub requirements, including IPv6 and a Thread-capable hub when using Thread accessories.
- The accessories you want are listed as compatible with Google Home and support the controls you expect.
Use Matter to preserve options, not to skip compatibility checks
If you are still building a smart home, a Matter-enabled accessory can be a reasonable way to keep more than one platform in consideration. A Matter smart plug, for example, may be a simple starting category, but verify its current listing, connectivity, required hub, and the features exposed in each app before purchase. A Matter logo by itself is not enough to establish a particular device’s cross-platform behavior.

Google announced Gemini for Home on October 1, 2025, describing it as a replacement for Google Assistant on smart displays and speakers and an upgrade to the Google Home app and camera-related products. Google’s compatibility information describes the Gemini for Home voice assistant as rolling out in early access, so do not assume it is available on every device or in every region. Check Google’s announcement and current compatibility information for applicable availability.

A practical checklist before you buy
- Start with your household’s phone and voice setup. Decide whether Apple Home or Google Home fits the devices and assistant you already use.
- Check each accessory model in the app you intend to use. Confirm platform compatibility and the particular controls or automations that matter to you.
- Match the hub to the device’s connectivity. For Apple Home, identify whether you need a supported Apple home hub for remote access or automations. For Google Matter, confirm a supported hub; add Thread border-router capability if the accessory uses Thread.
- Check your network before troubleshooting pairing. Google requires IPv6 for Matter and Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher for pairing; verify Google’s current setup requirements for your phone and app.
- Confirm regional assistant availability. In particular, treat Gemini for Home as an early-access rollout, not a universal feature.
