To see a links-focused results page, search as usual and select the Web filter. Google says that view shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. Its separate “AI in Search” Labs toggle only controls Labs experiments, not core AI Overviews.
Can you turn off Google AI Overviews?
No—not as a general setting for core Google Search, according to Google’s Search Help page. Google describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature. The practical option for an individual search is the Web filter, which changes the results view rather than setting a permanent account-wide preference.
Show text links without AI Overviews
- Run a search on Google.
- Choose Web in the search filters. Google says the Web filter displays text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.
The filter is selected after you search. Google’s documentation does not establish it as a permanent preference that removes Overviews from every search.
What the Labs toggle changes
Google also offers an “AI in Search” control for Labs experiments. To use it, be signed in to a Google Account, turn off Incognito mode, open Labs / Manage, and switch off AI in Search. This opts you out of the Labs experiment; it is not the general off switch for core AI Overviews. Google documents the distinction in its AI in Search Labs help.

Send feedback about one Overview
At the bottom of an Overview, use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down control. To report a problem, choose the report option and submit details. Google says feedback includes the most recent search query and its results. See its instructions for AI Overviews.
Where do AI Overviews get their sources?
Google says AI Overviews combine a customized Gemini model with its Search quality and ranking systems and the Knowledge Graph. The system seeks relevant, high-quality results from Google’s index to help corroborate information and provides links to web content for follow-up. Google says the feature is intended for searches where generative AI may help, such as complex questions or exploring a topic from several sources. Its explanation of AI Overviews describes the intended design, not a complete, reproducible rule for which pages will be cited for a particular query.

A citation is a place to check a claim, not proof that every sentence in an Overview is supported by that page. Open the linked source, find the relevant passage, and compare its wording and context with the generated claim. Google announced further source-discovery features on May 6, 2026, including suggestions for exploration, subscription links, and more direct links in AI responses. That announcement does not establish that every feature appears for every user or query; see Google’s May 6, 2026 update.
Can I choose preferred sources?
Google’s Preferred Sources documentation describes a way for users to signal publications they want to see. Where available, a selected source may receive a “preferred” badge in AI Overviews or AI Mode, subject to eligibility requirements. This gives a selected publication prominence; it does not switch off AI summaries or exclude other sources.

Are Google AI Overviews accurate?
They can be useful, but they are not dependable enough to accept unverified—especially for consequential decisions. Google’s own warning is direct: “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” It advises checking important information in more than one place, opening supporting links, trying other Search results, and asking multiple versions of a question. Generative AI may also produce inaccurate or offensive information. See Google’s guidance on AI Overviews.
One independent 2026 preprint, “Measuring Google AI Overviews: Activation, Source Quality, Claim Fidelity, and Publisher Impact”, examined 55,393 trending queries across 19 topical categories over 40 days, from March 13 through April 21, 2026. Its authors report that 11.0% of 98,020 analyzed atomic claims were unsupported by the cited pages. That is a result for the study’s query sample, claim-decomposition method, and period—not a universal accuracy rate for all Overviews. The authors also identify omission as the dominant failure mode, so an Overview can mislead by leaving out relevant context even when its included claims appear supported. Google does not provide a comparable overall accuracy percentage in the cited Help guidance.
A practical verification routine
- Open the citation. Check whether the linked page actually supports the specific claim, not just the general topic.
- Look for missing context. Check dates, exceptions, definitions, and qualifications that a short summary may leave out.
- Compare independent results. For important information, consult more than one credible source rather than treating several links that repeat the same claim as independent confirmation.
- Use an appropriate expert source. For health, legal, financial, or safety decisions, verify with qualified expertise rather than relying on a generated summary.
Can a website owner opt out?
Google described a separate Search Console control in a May 2026 announcement. The control was under test and intended to let site owners manage whether their sites appear in and help ground Google’s generative AI Search features, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. Google said a site opting out would lose traffic and impressions from those features, while the control would not affect its Search ranking outside them. See Google’s announcement.
This is a publisher-side control, not a way for an individual searcher to remove AI Overviews from Google. Google described it as a test, so availability and wording may vary; a site owner should check Search Console to see whether the control is available for their property. The stated tradeoff is losing traffic and impressions from the covered AI features.
