Overviews can help you get oriented on a multi-part question, but they can make mistakes. Use their links to check important claims—or choose Google’s Web filter when you want a text-link view without features such as AI Overviews.
What is the difference between an AI Overview and traditional Google results?
An AI Overview is a generated response embedded in a Google Search results page. It synthesizes information and provides links for further exploration. A traditional results view foregrounds a list of webpages, usually with titles and snippets; Search may also show features such as local business information or weather.
That changes the work you do. With an Overview, you can begin with a single summary and then inspect its sources. With a link-focused results page, you scan pages, choose which to open, and draw the answer together yourself. Google describes Overviews as particularly useful for questions that may otherwise take several searches, but that is a product goal—not a guarantee that every summary is complete or correct.
How do sources and citations appear?
AI Overviews include links to supporting web content, but the way those links are displayed varies. Google said in May 2026 that AI responses may include contextual inline links, article suggestions, subscription labels, previews of public discussions and firsthand perspectives, and desktop hover previews. Which elements appear depends on the query and product rollout. Google’s May 2026 update describes those changes.

A link in an Overview is a route to a source, not proof that every sentence in the summary is fully supported by that page. Open the linked material and check whether it actually substantiates the claim you care about. For consequential questions, compare more than one source and look for primary information where available.
Are AI Overviews accurate?
They can be useful, but they are generated answers rather than a substitute for checking sources. Google Search Help warns: “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes.” Google’s AI Overviews help page also advises people to use judgment and verify information.

Google’s May 2024 explanation acknowledged possible errors from misinterpreting a query, missing language nuance, or having too little reliable information—including unusual searches where satirical or misleading material may seem relevant. Google said it had made improvements to address such cases. Its reported testing also found Overview accuracy comparable to featured snippets; that is a company-reported test claim, not an independent audit of every live answer. Google’s explanation of the feature’s early rollout discusses both its test claims and the failure modes it identified.
- For orientation: An Overview can give you a starting point on a question with several parts. Follow its links to learn more.
- For high-stakes, disputed, current, or unusual questions: Check the underlying pages, compare independent sources, and consult authoritative primary information before acting.
- If a result seems odd: Try a more specific or differently worded query, then inspect the results rather than relying on the summary alone.
How do I get Google to show just links?
Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and cannot be turned off as a feature setting. Its help page says, “Features cannot be turned off.” You can, however, use the Web filter after searching to see text-based links without features such as Overviews. It is a filtered view within Search, not a separate product.

- Run your search on Google.
- On the results page, select Web from the search filters. If it is not visible among the initial options, check the additional filters menu.
- Use the resulting text-link view to open and compare webpages.
Google’s interface can vary by device, region, and rollout, so the filter’s position may differ. Google documents the filter and feature controls in its AI Overviews help page. Avoid relying on URL parameters or browser tricks as permanent controls.
What does independent evidence say about clicks?
An August 2026 preprint by Athena Chapekis, Anna Lieb, Sono Shah, and Aaron Smith analyzed one month of browsing data from a representative panel of 900 U.S. adults. It estimated that about 1% of AI Overview visits included a click to a source cited in the Overview. The study also found an association between Overviews and fewer clicks and more browsing sessions ending. These are observational results: they describe measured behavior and adjusted associations, not proof that the Overview alone caused people to stop browsing. The study’s preprint sets out its methods and findings.
Google’s 2024 statements presented a different measure: the company said its testing found higher user satisfaction and higher-quality clicks from Overviews, with users spending more time on destination pages. Those company-reported test results do not directly contradict a later study measuring browsing behavior in a panel; they concern different evidence and should not be treated as a universal rule about what users do.

Google says Overviews combine generative AI—including a customized Gemini model—with Search quality and ranking systems and the Knowledge Graph. The company describes the feature as finding relevant web results that corroborate information in its generated answer. That is Google’s account of its design and goals, not an independent assessment of how well each result is grounded. Google’s overview of its Search approach explains the stated architecture.

Overviews are distinct from AI Mode, which is a separate conversational Search experience. On supported mobile devices and in supported regions and languages, Google may let you expand an Overview and continue into AI Mode with the original search context carried over. Availability and presentation can vary; Google’s help page describes this handoff.
