If your installed preview is newer than the public Windows 11 release, that switch will not downgrade Windows; you can wait for a production build and then opt out, or restore Windows using the recovery instructions for your device.
Check which Windows build is installed
Before choosing an exit route, find out whether the PC is already on a production build. Open Settings > System > About, or press Windows key + R, enter winver, and check the build information. Microsoft’s guidance makes the installed build the key distinction: opting out is least disruptive when Windows is already on a production build. Microsoft’s Windows Insider opt-out guidance
Choose the right way to leave the Beta Channel
If the PC is already on a production build
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Stop getting preview builds.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to opt out.
Microsoft says opting out while using a production build does not lose information. This is the settings-only route; it does not require you to restore Windows to an earlier build.
If the installed preview is ahead of the public release
Turning off preview builds does not install an earlier stable release. You can keep using the current build and opt out when the next production or publicly released build is available. If waiting is not suitable and you need to return to the device’s original operating system, Microsoft describes restoring it with a Windows 11 recovery image. Back up files you want to keep first, then use the instructions for your specific PC; there is no single recovery-image procedure that applies to every device. Why “Go back” is not the same as leaving Insider
The Windows Recovery Go back option rolls back an upgrade; it does not remove the PC from the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft warns, “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.” If another preview is ready, it can be installed again. Microsoft Support: Go back to the previous version of Windows
Go back is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, but availability can vary by PC. It keeps personal files while removing apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and undoing Settings changes made since then. If you use this option, separately follow the Insider opt-out instructions when the PC is on a production build.
