Google Calendar treats a timed event as a start and end instant, then displays each instant in the viewer’s local time zone. An all-day event is different: it uses calendar dates, not timed instants. That distinction explains why attendees can see different clock times for the same meeting—and why an all-day event should not be interpreted as midnight UTC.

Timed events show the same instant in each viewer’s local time

Google Calendar’s help documentation explains: “When events are created, they’re converted into UTC, but you’ll always see them in your local time.” In practice, a meeting set for 9 a.m. in one location can appear at a different hour for an invitee elsewhere. The displayed clock time changes with the viewer’s time zone; the event refers to the same point in time.

A timed event has a start and end date-time. Its own time-zone setting supplies context for those times, while the viewer’s local zone determines how they appear on screen. A date-time can be represented with an explicit UTC offset, paired with a named time zone, or expressed in UTC. Google’s Calendar API uses IANA time-zone identifiers, such as Europe/Zurich.

For a one-time event, you can set different zones for the start and end—for example, for an appointment that begins before a flight and ends after landing. A recurring event uses one time zone so Calendar can expand each occurrence consistently. This matters when the intent is to keep a recurring meeting at the same local wall-clock hour as seasons change: that is different from scheduling a fixed UTC instant.

All-day events use dates, not appointment times

An all-day event uses start.date and end.date, rather than start.dateTime and end.dateTime. Both endpoints must use the same representation: an event cannot have a timed start and an all-day end. The API says a time-zone field has no significance for an all-day event.

In the API, the start date is inclusive and the end date is exclusive. For example, an event with a start date of May 16 and an end date of May 17 covers May 16 only. The exclusive end date is a boundary, not an additional day of the event.

Set or compare time zones in Calendar

Choose a zone for an event

  1. On a computer, open the event editor.
  2. Select the time-zone control beside the event time and choose the desired zone.
  3. If the event starts and ends in different zones, select Use separate start and end time zones, then set each one.
  4. Save the event.

Compare another zone

To see another location’s hours alongside your own, set a secondary time zone in Calendar settings. This is a display aid; it does not change the event’s start or end.

For API users: event, calendar, and response zones

Three zones can matter when working with Calendar data: the event’s zone, the calendar’s default zone, and an optional response zone requested from the API. The API response uses the requested timeZone when supplied; otherwise, it uses the calendar’s zone. For all-day events in time-bounded queries, the calendar zone is used to calculate the date bounds.

For the Events: list method, query time bounds must use RFC3339 date-times with offsets, and the documented filter bounds are exclusive. These query bounds are separate from an event’s own inclusive start and exclusive end.

Why a displayed time can be wrong

Time-zone rules can change, including daylight-saving rules. Google Calendar Help, checked October 4, 2026, warns that past or future events may not reflect daylight-saving changes correctly; an event created before Google knew about a regional rule change can display at the wrong zone time. Google says times adjust automatically as dates move within a few years, but its warning means you should not assume every historical or far-future event will always display correctly.

If a time looks wrong, first check the event’s selected zone and your own Calendar time-zone settings. For an event spanning locations, confirm whether separate start and end zones are intended. For a recurring series, check its single zone and the occurrence date. If local rules have changed since the event was created, verify the intended time with the organizer and update the event if necessary.
