For most U.S. Galaxy owners on Android 12 or newer, Google Messages is the practical choice: Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued on those devices starting July 6, 2026, and directs affected users to switch. That does not mean Samsung Messages stopped working everywhere or on every older Android device. Outside that U.S. guidance, availability depends on your device, Android version, carrier, and region.
How the apps compare now
| Question | Google Messages | Samsung Messages |
|---|---|---|
| Availability for U.S. Galaxy users | Samsung directs users affected by its discontinuation notice to Google Messages. | Samsung says the app was discontinued on devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026. Its legacy instructions cover Android 11 or older. |
| SMS/MMS messages when switching | Google says changing the default messaging app does not erase existing SMS/MMS messages. | Samsung says messages and conversations transfer automatically to Google Messages; a full transfer can take up to approximately 24 hours depending on data volume. |
| RCS | Google documents RCS features including typing indicators, read receipts, group management, and high-resolution media where supported. | Availability and behavior depend on the device, carrier, region, and contacts. Samsung warns of temporary RCS disruption during transition on devices released before 2022. |
| Cross-device use | Google documents messaging on selected Galaxy tablets and Wear OS watches, subject to device and setup limits. | Samsung documents Call & text on other devices for supported phone, tablet, and watch combinations, with carrier and model restrictions. |
| Legacy app features | Google’s RCS and multi-device options are the key documented advantages for users prioritizing those capabilities. | Samsung’s guide for Android 11 or older describes conversation search, pinning, categories, number blocking, and restoring deleted messages from Trash within 30 days. |
Samsung’s U.S. transition guidance is the deciding factor for affected newer Galaxy devices. For older devices and users outside the scope of that notice, there is no universal winner established across every carrier, country, and model.
Why Google Messages is the better choice for affected U.S. Galaxy phones
Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued on U.S. devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026, and tells affected users to switch to Google Messages. Samsung also says Galaxy S26 and newer devices cannot download Samsung Messages from Galaxy Store; other devices lose the ability to download it after discontinuation. After discontinuation, Samsung says messages cannot be sent through Samsung Messages except to emergency service numbers or designated emergency contacts. See Samsung’s U.S. transition guidance and its discontinuation details.
Samsung has a separate legacy Samsung Messages guide for Android 11 or older. If you have one of those devices and the app is still available in your market, its documented features may remain useful; check local availability and carrier support rather than assuming the newer-device notice applies to you.

What transfers when you switch
Samsung says existing messages and conversations transfer automatically between Samsung Messages and Google Messages, with the time to complete depending on the amount of data. Its U.S. guidance says a full transfer may take up to approximately 24 hours. Google also says changing the default messaging app does not lose SMS/MMS messages. These are support statements, not a guarantee that every proprietary feature or non-interoperable message form carries over. See Samsung’s transition page and Google’s switching guidance.
To switch, open Google Messages and follow its prompt to make it the default SMS app. If you do not see a prompt, use your phone’s Settings app to select the default messaging app; the exact menu labels can vary by Android version and device. Keep the phone powered and connected while a large message history is being transferred, and allow time for completion.

RCS: useful features, with compatibility and security limits
Google documents RCS features such as typing indicators, read receipts, group management, and high-resolution media, including in conversations with iPhone users. These features are conditional: availability depends on country, carrier, device, and whether the people in a conversation have RCS enabled. Google’s RCS help page describes supported features and compatibility.
Do not treat all RCS conversations as end-to-end encrypted. Google says RCS conversations between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted, while RCS chats with iPhone users are not. If a recipient cannot use RCS, Google Messages can fall back to SMS/MMS. RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; mobile-data charges depend on the user’s plan. See Google’s RCS details and its SMS/MMS and RCS guidance.

Samsung warns that devices released before 2022 may experience a temporary RCS interruption during the move. SMS/MMS remains available during that period, and Samsung says RCS resumes if both sides use Google Messages.
Using messages across a Galaxy phone, tablet, or watch
Google documents messaging on selected Galaxy tablets and Wear OS watches. Setup can involve signing in with the same Google Account or pairing devices, depending on the device and feature. Google also notes limits for legacy tablets and watches: they cannot use RCS for one-to-one conversations or create new RCS groups. Check Google’s device-pairing guidance for supported options and setup details.

Samsung’s Call & text on other devices feature has separate restrictions. Samsung says it currently does not work with Verizon and AT&T phones and may not be available on all models from other carriers. Samsung also says pre-Watch4 Tizen watches will no longer display full conversation history after discontinuation, although users can still read and send texts. Confirm your phone model, carrier, and companion device support using Samsung’s device guidance.

If you are on Android 11 or older and Samsung Messages remains available on your device, Samsung’s legacy guide describes options that some users may rely on:

- Restore deleted messages from Trash within 30 days.
Those are features documented for the legacy app, not proof that Samsung Messages is supported with the same capabilities on newer Android versions. The relevant guide is Samsung Messages for Android 11 or older.
How to choose for your situation
- U.S. Galaxy phone on Android 12 or newer: Use Google Messages, following Samsung’s discontinuation guidance.
- Android 11 or older with Samsung Messages still available: Decide whether the legacy features you use matter more to you than Google’s documented RCS and cross-device options; check local and carrier support.
- You text iPhone users often: Google Messages can offer RCS features when supported, but confirm availability with your carrier and contacts. RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted.
- You rely on a tablet or watch: Check the specific phone, tablet, watch generation, and carrier combination before depending on continuity features.
- You need messages to work with people who lack RCS: SMS/MMS remains the fallback in Google Messages.
Product behavior and carrier or regional availability can change. Samsung’s transition statements cited here are from its U.S. support materials; Google and Samsung’s device-support pages describe supported features and limits rather than guaranteeing compatibility for every combination.
