Usually, yes—if only your broadband internet is down and your router and home Wi-Fi are still working. HomeKit can discover and control compatible accessories over the local network. But a hub cannot restore a failed Wi-Fi network, and control from outside the home generally depends on an internet connection.

What “internet is down” means for Apple Home

There are three different failures to distinguish: an internet-service outage, a local network failure, and a power outage. They have different effects on Home app control.

What is down? What may still work? What to expect
Broadband or ISP service only Local control from a device connected to the home Wi-Fi, for accessories reachable on that network. Cloud-dependent features and control from away may fail.
Router or Wi-Fi Possibly accessories using a separate local connection, depending on their setup. Wi-Fi accessories and bridges may become unreachable; a home hub does not replace the local network.
Power Equipment that still has power, including anything supported by a backup supply. A powered-off router, hub, bridge, or accessory cannot provide its normal service.

When local control can work

If the router is still broadcasting Wi-Fi and your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to the home network, the Home app may communicate with compatible accessories locally even without broadband. Apple’s Platform Security guide describes HomeKit’s local discovery and control path: in “Restrict to Home” router mode, accessories can be limited to the internet and local-network connections required for HomeKit to discover and control them. Apple Platform Security: Secure accessories.

This establishes that HomeKit has a local-network path; it does not mean every command, automation, or accessory feature is guaranteed to work offline. Accessories and bridges may rely on manufacturer services, and features that need an internet service can be unavailable even when local control works.

What the home hub does—and does not do

Apple describes a home hub as the way to control accessories while away from home and support certain Home features. That remote route depends on connectivity to the home. If broadband is unavailable, assume remote access will not work until the connection is restored. Apple Support: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub.

The hub also does not substitute for a working router or Wi-Fi network. If local networking has failed, a hub cannot make Wi-Fi accessories reachable through that network. For Matter accessories using Thread, Apple’s compatibility guidance specifies the need for a compatible Thread-enabled home hub or border router; requirements depend on the accessory and setup. Features that may be affected

Local accessory control is not the same as full Home functionality. Siri requests, notifications, automations, remote access, and manufacturer-specific features can depend on the accessory, software, network, and whether a cloud service is involved. Apple cautions that network or internet problems can affect Siri requests and Home app accessory control; it does not publish a universal offline feature matrix. Apple Support: If your HomePod isn’t responding.

  • Home app control at home: may work when the device and accessory can communicate over the functioning local network.
  • Control while away: should not be expected during a loss of the home’s internet path.
  • Cloud-dependent accessory features: may stop even if basic local commands remain available.
  • Siri, notifications, and automations: behavior varies; do not assume they all continue offline.

How to check what is actually offline

  1. Check whether Wi-Fi still works. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the home Wi-Fi and see whether the router is powered and the network is available. An ISP outage can leave the modem and router on while internet access is lost. Check your provider’s outage information. Apple Support troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Try local control from home. Open the Home app while your Apple device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories. Apple recommends checking that the device and HomePod are on the same Wi-Fi network when accessories do not respond. Apple Support: If your HomePod isn’t responding.
  3. Check the hub and accessory power. Make sure the home hub is on and connected to the home Wi-Fi, and check power to any bridge and affected accessory. Apple treats an unreachable hub and a network mismatch as separate troubleshooting issues. Apple Support: Set up a home hub.
  4. If several devices fail, restart the network equipment and affected devices. Apple advises restarting the modem or router, hubs, and accessories; also check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering. Apple Support troubleshooting guidance.

Would a battery backup help?

A UPS can keep connected equipment such as a router and home hub powered during some power interruptions, but it does not restore a failed router, recreate a lost local network, or bring back ISP service. Its usefulness depends on which devices are plugged into it and how long the outage lasts; no particular model or runtime is established here.
