To disable call detection for one app, first identify what the phone is doing: showing caller ID, screening a call, filtering unknown callers, or silencing carrier-identified spam. These are separate features. On iPhone, turn off a supported caller ID app under Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification. On supported Pixel phones using Google Phone, disable automatic Call Screen in the Phone app’s settings. Other Android phones do not share one universal per-app switch.
Identify which call feature you want to stop
“Call detection” is not one setting shared by every phone. Before changing anything, match the behavior you see to the feature that causes it:
- Caller identification: An app or phone service displays a caller’s name or labels a number as potential spam.
- Call screening: The phone or an app answers or evaluates a call before you decide whether to pick up.
- Unknown-caller filtering: Calls from numbers not recognized by your phone may be silenced or handled differently.
- Spam filtering: A carrier or phone service may identify and silence calls it considers spam or fraud.
Disabling one does not necessarily disable the others. Use the instructions for the feature you want to change, and check that the control names match the app and software version on your device.
Turn off a caller identification app on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
- Turn off the switch beside the caller identification app you no longer want to use.
This controls caller identification supplied by supported apps. It does not by itself change iPhone’s separate unknown-caller screening or spam filtering. Apple documents these controls in its iPhone guide to screening and blocking calls.

Change unknown-caller screening or filtering on iPhone
If the issue is calls from numbers you do not recognize, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Apple lists these choices:
- Never: Do not screen unknown callers.
- Ask Reason for Calling: Ask an unknown caller for information before the phone rings through.
- Silence: Silence calls from unknown numbers.
For filtering, look under Call Filtering in Phone settings. Unknown Callers and Spam are distinct filters; Spam silences calls the carrier identifies as spam or fraud. Apple notes that screening is unavailable while roaming, and that calling emergency services turns call screening off for 24 hours. See Apple’s guide to managing unknown callers for these behaviors.

Turn off automatic Call Screen in Google Phone
On supported Pixel phones using Google Phone, disable automatic screening as follows:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen, depending on the app version.
- Tap Call Screen, then turn off Automatically screen call.
This switch affects automatic Call Screen, not every caller ID or spam feature. Manual screening is a separate action. Google documents automatic Call Screen availability in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 or later; it does not automatically screen calls from your contacts. What to do on other Android phones or in another app
Android supports call-screening implementations through the CallScreeningService platform API, but that does not create a single consumer settings path across manufacturers. Android’s developer documentation describes the platform support, not a universal phone setting: Android Developers: Screen calls.
On a non-Pixel Android phone, start with the app that appears to be handling the call:

- Open the caller ID or call-screening app and look for its caller ID, screening, or spam settings.
- Check the phone app’s settings for labels such as caller ID, spam protection, call screening, or blocked numbers.
- If the feature is still active, check whether your carrier provides a separate spam-filtering service.
Do not assume a generic “call detection” switch exists. The available controls depend on the phone maker, dialer app, software version, region, carrier, and the app itself. On Google Phone, caller ID and spam protection are also distinct from automatic Call Screen; Google says numbers outside your contacts may be sent to Google to help identify businesses or determine spam.
