Brittle nails have been reported during significant GLP-1-associated weight loss, but that does not prove the medication directly caused your nail changes or identify a nutrient deficiency.
Why nails may change during GLP-1-associated weight loss
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists slower nail growth and brittle nails among changes reported by people experiencing significant weight loss while using GLP-1 drugs. It does not give a nail-specific incidence rate or establish that the medication itself directly causes brittle nails. Read the AAD’s guidance on skin and hair changes during weight loss.
One reason to pay attention to food intake is that appetite and energy intake may drop during treatment, making it harder to get enough nutrients. A 2025 advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society identifies iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins A, D, E, K, B1, B12, and C among nutrients that may be difficult to obtain in a substantially lower-calorie diet. The advisory reports observed calorie reductions of 16%–39% among individuals using GLP-1s to treat obesity; that range is not a prediction for any one person. These points support nutrition planning, not a conclusion that a particular nutrient explains an individual’s nail changes. See the 2025 joint nutrition advisory.
Nail changes are nonspecific. MedlinePlus lists inadequate nutrition, iron-deficiency anemia, thyroid disease, injury, and eczema around the nail among possible contributors. The timing of the changes, other symptoms, diet, and nail-care habits can all help a clinician decide whether evaluation is appropriate. See MedlinePlus information about nail abnormalities.

Gentle habits to protect fragile nails
- Keep nails at a practical length. Shorter nails are less likely to catch and split. Smooth rough edges by filing gently in one direction.
- Limit repeated wetting and drying. Wear gloves for prolonged wet work or when using cleaning products. Frequent cycles of soaking and drying can add stress to fragile nails.
- Go easy on nail products and cuticles. Avoid biting or picking, aggressive cuticle cutting, and frequent use of harsh polish removers while nails are fragile.
- Moisturize dry skin and cuticles. Apply a simple hand moisturizer after washing or bathing, or whenever the surrounding skin feels dry. The AAD recommends moisturizing skin and cuticles; this is supportive skin care, not a proven way to repair the nail plate. See the AAD’s healthy nail-care tips.
Support adequate nutrition and know when to ask for help
A varied diet with adequate energy and protein, as tolerated, can be part of a broader nutrition plan during weight loss. The 2025 advisory cites the general adult protein RDA of 0.8 g/kg/day; it is not an individualized target for everyone losing weight. A clinician or registered dietitian can help determine what is suitable for you, especially if reduced appetite or gastrointestinal symptoms are making it difficult to eat enough.
Tell your prescribing care team about persistently low intake, ongoing nausea or vomiting, or difficulty meeting food needs. The joint advisory calls for nutritional counseling and monitoring during GLP-1 obesity treatment. Do not change or stop a prescription medication without discussing it with the prescriber.

Ask your clinician or a dermatologist about persistent or worsening nail changes, changes affecting multiple nails, or nail problems that occur alongside fatigue, hair loss, skin changes, or other symptoms. Depending on your situation, they can consider the weight-loss and medication timeline, diet, symptoms, and other possible causes.

A brittle nail does not diagnose iron, zinc, biotin, protein, or any other deficiency. Nail appearance alone cannot establish the cause, and high-dose supplements are not a general fix. Ask a clinician whether testing or supplementation makes sense for you rather than starting iron or high-dose biotin on your own.
