Can hair shedding during GLP-1 treatment stop?
It may improve, but the available evidence does not establish a single recovery schedule or guarantee regrowth. FDA product labeling associates reported hair loss with weight reduction. The FDA’s semaglutide clinical review discusses weight loss and nutritional deficiencies as possible explanations, but does not establish one definitive cause or a recovery timeline.
That distinction matters: a hair-loss event reported while taking a medicine does not prove the medicine itself directly caused it. Weight-loss pace, changes in appetite or nutrition, and unrelated causes may also be relevant. A clinician can help assess what may be contributing in your case.
What do the product labels report?
The figures below come from each medicine’s own pooled weight-management study data. They are reports of adverse events in those studies, not predictions of an individual’s chance of hair loss. Do not use the raw figures to rank the medicines: their study groups and designs were not identical.

Can GLP-1 treatment change your nails?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that significant weight loss can be associated with slower nail growth and brittle nails. The reviewed guidance does not give a GLP-1-specific rate for nail changes or a recovery timeline, so it cannot establish how often these changes happen during GLP-1 treatment or when they will resolve.
What should you do about hair or nail changes?
- Tell your prescriber. Report changes that persist or concern you. Do not stop, reduce, or otherwise alter a prescribed dose without discussing it with the clinician who manages your treatment.
- Prepare useful context. Note when the change began, how quickly your weight has changed, your medication and dose history, appetite or diet changes, and any other symptoms. These details can help guide a discussion but are not a diagnostic checklist.
- Ask whether specialist care would help. The AAD advises communicating with your medical team and partnering with a board-certified dermatologist for skin, hair, or nail concerns. Are supplements or stopping treatment proven fixes?
The cited sources do not establish supplements, shampoos, topical products, or scalp devices as proven treatments for GLP-1-associated hair or nail changes. Nor do they show that stopping the medicine guarantees recovery. If you use a compounded GLP-1 product, the FDA advises professional vigilance when prescribing and dosing unapproved products; discuss concerns with your clinician rather than trying to manage the dose yourself.
