Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] is an optional prequel, while Choujin X is a separate series you can start whenever you like.
Recommended reading order for the Tokyo Ghoul story
- Tokyo Ghoul — Start with the original manga. VIZ lists the series, including Vol. 1 and a complete box set.
- Tokyo Ghoul:re — Continue with this sequel after finishing the original. Shueisha identifies Vol. 1 as a Sui Ishida manga, and VIZ maintains a separate series listing.
This is the practical order for following the central story: Tokyo Ghoul → Tokyo Ghoul:re.
Where Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] fits
Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] is a prequel; VIZ describes it as “A prequel to the hit series Tokyo Ghoul!” in its listing. For a first read, you can leave it until after the two main series. That keeps the main sequence straightforward; reading it first is also an option if you prefer to follow in-world chronology. Neither placement is presented as a mandatory official order.
Can you read Choujin X on its own?
Yes. Choujin X is another Sui Ishida manga, presented by VIZ as “The latest from Sui Ishida, creator of Tokyo Ghoul!” Its series page lists it separately. You do not need to read Tokyo Ghoul or Tokyo Ghoul:re before starting it, and it does not belong between them in the reading order.

Quick order by reader preference
| What you want to read | Suggested order |
|---|---|
| The central Tokyo Ghoul story | Tokyo Ghoul → Tokyo Ghoul:re |
| The prequel as well | Tokyo Ghoul → Tokyo Ghoul:re → Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] (optional) |
| The prequel first for chronology | Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] → Tokyo Ghoul → Tokyo Ghoul:re |
| A separate Ishida series | Choujin X whenever you like |
The first two rows are reading recommendations, not a publisher-mandated combined order. The official listings establish the main series and the prequel status of [Jack], but do not prescribe one required order for every related work.
