You can open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in LibreOffice and save them back in Microsoft Office formats. To preserve the intended file type, choose it explicitly in File > Save As or set it as the default for that document category. That keeps the file in the format recipients expect, but it cannot guarantee that every layout detail will look identical: complex formatting, unavailable fonts, and macros can behave differently.
Will an Office document look the same in LibreOffice?
Not necessarily. LibreOffice opens common Microsoft Office files in Writer, Calc, or Impress, but the two suites do not handle every feature identically. The Document Foundation says the amount of reformatting to expect is proportional to the complexity of the source document’s structure and formatting. There is no official percentage that predicts how many files will transfer without changes.
Simple documents may need little attention; documents that depend on elaborate layouts, specialized objects, or application-specific features deserve a careful review. Saving as DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX preserves the selected file format, not a guarantee of pixel-for-pixel compatibility.
Open the file and preserve the Office format
- Keep the original and work on a copy. This is a prudent precaution for complex or important files, so you can return to the source if conversion changes something.
- Open the copy in LibreOffice. Choose File > Open. LibreOffice selects Writer for Word documents, Calc for Excel files, and Impress for PowerPoint presentations.
- Review the document before editing or sharing. Check the layout and features most important to the file; see the application-specific checklist below.
- Save in the recipient’s required format. Choose File > Save As, then select the relevant Microsoft Office file type, such as DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX. Confirm the type in the save dialog before saving.
- Inspect the saved result. If exact appearance matters, check the saved file in the software the recipient will use. This is a practical way to catch conversion differences, not a guarantee that every feature will match.
If LibreOffice warns that some formatting or features may not be supported in the chosen format, review the warning before proceeding. Keep an editable OpenDocument copy as well if you plan to continue working in LibreOffice and want to retain its native format.

Set Office formats as the default for future saves
If you routinely exchange files with Office users, LibreOffice lets you choose default save formats by document category in its Load/Save settings. Open the Load/Save settings, select the relevant document type, and choose the Microsoft Office format you want LibreOffice to use by default. The exact menu path or labels can vary by operating system and release; verify the chosen format when saving an important file.
A default helps avoid repeatedly selecting a format, but it does not remove the need to check the file type. Use the recipient’s required format for each document, especially when sending a presentation, spreadsheet, or document that will be edited in Microsoft Office.

Check the features most likely to change
Conversion risks depend on the features a file uses. Prioritize elements that affect meaning, pagination, or how the recipient will edit the file.
Writer and Word documents
- Check page breaks, columns, tables, frames, headers, and footers.
- Review revision marks, indexes, hyperlinks, bookmarks, and form fields or controls.
- Inspect AutoShapes, WordArt, OLE objects, and animated text where present.
Impress and PowerPoint presentations
- Check slide spacing, including tab, line, and paragraph spacing.
- Review master backgrounds and graphics, grouped objects, and AutoShapes.
- Test multimedia effects or other presentation effects the file relies on.
Calc and Excel spreadsheets
- Review pivot tables, newer chart types, conditional formatting, and formulas.
- Check AutoShapes, OLE objects, and form controls or fields.
- Verify that important calculations, chart data, and displayed results still make sense.
These are potential trouble spots, not a claim that every item will change. Focus first on the parts that carry information or affect how the document is used.

Check fonts before sharing
If a document uses a font that is not installed on your computer, LibreOffice can substitute another font for display or printing. The replacement can change line breaks, spacing, or pagination even though it does not change the font specified in the document.
LibreOffice provides a replacement table under Preferences/Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Fonts. Menu wording may vary by operating system and release. If the recipient’s layout depends on a particular font, confirm that font is available in the environment used to review or print the file.

Macros need a separate compatibility check
Saving a workbook in an Office file format does not make its macros compatible. Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally use different macro code and object models. LibreOffice says some Excel VBA scripts may run when the feature is enabled, but that does not establish that a particular script will work. Test macro-dependent files in the software and workflow where they will actually be used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the format for the recipient’s workflow
Use a Microsoft Office format when the recipient needs to open or edit the file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Use an OpenDocument format when the recipient expects LibreOffice’s native formats. If exact rendering, advanced layout, or macro behavior is essential, check the converted file in the recipient’s intended application rather than relying on the extension alone.
