None is documented as a feature-for-feature replacement for Google Maps’ Gemini-powered Ask Maps.
What “Gemini Maps” means—and what you are comparing
Google offers two related ways to find places. Gemini Apps can answer place-related questions and provide links that open in Google Maps. Separately, Ask Maps is a conversational experience inside Google Maps, announced in March 2026. Google describes it as a way to ask complex questions and get personalized recommendations with a map.
That distinction matters: an alternative may help you choose a restaurant or find somewhere nearby without matching Google Maps’ map and navigation integration. Compare the services by discovery style, evidence behind recommendations, map context, and whether the feature is available to you—not just by whether you can type a question.
Best alternatives for finding places
| Service | Best fit | What the cited sources establish | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Maps | Conversational nearby discovery | ChatGPT Maps invites users to share location and ask about nearby recommendations, news, and weather. OpenAI release notes also describe using location context for nearby options. | Availability, coverage, and location precision are not established as universal; the cited pages do not establish full navigation parity with Google Maps. |
| Yelp AI assistant | Local suggestions you can inspect alongside reviews | The Associated Press reported that Yelp’s assistant recommends local businesses alongside relevant reviews. | This is evidence for review-linked local recommendations, not for turn-by-turn navigation or a complete map replacement. |
| Apple Maps | Integrated mapping with search and curated discovery | Apple documents Nearby categories, natural-language searches such as “Find cafes with free Wi-Fi,” and curated Guides. | The cited Apple pages do not present these capabilities as a Gemini-like conversational AI assistant. |
ChatGPT Maps: ask for nearby options in ordinary language
ChatGPT Maps is the clearest alternative here when you want to describe what you are looking for conversationally—for example, a nearby place that suits a particular need. Its product page asks you to share location to ask about what is nearby. Treat that as an explicit location-sharing choice, and check the feature in your account and region rather than assuming identical behavior everywhere.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
OpenAI’s release notes separately describe location context for nearby options. Together, these sources support using ChatGPT for location-aware discovery, but do not establish universal availability or that its map and directions work exactly like Google Maps.
Yelp: recommendations with reviews in view
Yelp’s distinctive advantage is the connection between a recommendation and the reviews behind it. In an Associated Press report published April 20, 2026, the assistant is described as recommending local businesses alongside relevant reviews. That makes it a useful option when you want to examine customer feedback as part of choosing a business, rather than receive a bare list of places.

- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
The AP reported that Yelp had 330 million local business reviews. That is the figure reported in the April 2026 article, not an independently verified current total. Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman characterized the assistant’s ability to process reviews by saying it can understand “500 reviews in a second”; this is his description, not a controlled performance benchmark.
Apple Maps: search, Nearby categories, and Guides
Apple Maps is a practical choice if you want place discovery within a mapping service, but the documented features are search and curation rather than a chatbot equivalent. Apple lists Nearby categories and natural-language searches, and its iPhone guide to exploring places with Maps Guides explains how to use curated place lists.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
Use Apple Maps when a category search or a guide is a better fit than a back-and-forth conversation. Apple’s Maps overview describes the service and its discovery features.
How Google’s Ask Maps compares
If you are looking for an alternative because you want a different way to explore, keep Ask Maps in the comparison. Google’s March 2026 announcement describes complex questions and personalized recommendations with a map. In an August 6, 2026 update, Google described planning around restaurants along a route, saved places, and dietary needs.

Those examples show why natural-language input alone is not the whole comparison: Google’s documented experience can incorporate route and saved-place context. The sources do not establish that the other services offer the same combination.

- Pick ChatGPT Maps if you want to ask conversational questions about nearby options and are comfortable sharing location when prompted.
- Try Yelp if review context alongside local recommendations is central to your decision.
- Use Apple Maps if you want an integrated map service and prefer Nearby categories, natural-language search, or curated Guides.
- Stay with Ask Maps in the comparison if route, saved-place, or dietary context matters to your search.
Before relying on any feature, check its current availability for your country, language, account, device, and location settings. Google’s Gemini Apps help page, for example, says its cited place features require users to be at least 18, signed in to a personal Google Account, and asking about a place in English; it also says device location may be used with permission. These stated conditions apply to that Gemini Apps help page, not automatically to every Ask Maps feature or region.
