On the Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details, then check Update schedule. The date beside “This device will get automatic updates until” is the update deadline for that device.

Find the update date in ChromeOS settings

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. In the left pane, select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Additional details.
  5. Under Update schedule, read the date in “This device will get automatic updates until [date].” Record it if you need to plan around the device’s remaining support.

Google’s instructions are available in its Chromebook update help.

What the date tells you

The displayed date is the end of the device’s automatic update schedule. It is more useful than the purchase year or the manufacturer’s name: support dates are tied to the device and can differ even between models with similar names. Google’s automatic update policy and model schedule lists dates by manufacturer and model, and sometimes distinguishes configurations.

Google’s current policy states that Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates. Chrome Enterprise and Education describes that period as 10 years from the platform release date. Some pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates may not support certain features and services. Check the date shown on the Chromebook or the exact model entry rather than estimating support from the device’s age.

For example, Google’s schedule lists the Pixelbook for August 2027 and Pixelbook Go for June 2029. These dates illustrate how support varies by model; they are not a substitute for checking your Chromebook. Google can update its schedule, so consult the current listing.

Why end of sale is not the update deadline

A manufacturer decides when a Chromebook stops being sold. Google says that end-of-sale timing is unrelated to eligibility for Google updates. Use the device’s update schedule—not a retailer listing or the date a model disappeared from stores—to identify its update deadline.

If the update schedule is managed by an administrator

A Chromebook issued by a school or workplace may show “Updates are managed by your administrator” instead of a date. Contact the school or workplace administrator to ask about the device’s update policy.

What happens after the final update

When ChromeOS displays a Final software update notification, the device no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates. That means security updates, bug fixes, and new features stop. Google also warns that existing features may stop working and that some apps require newer ChromeOS or browser versions. See Google’s guidance on using an older Chromebook.
