Recommended Free Tools
To use iOS 27’s new photo-editing tools, open a picture in Photos and tap Edit → Tools. Choose Clean Up to remove a distraction, Extend to generate space beyond the photo’s edges, or Reframe to adjust its perspective. These Apple Intelligence editing tools require a supported iPhone—not just any iPhone that can install iOS 27—and availability also depends on language and region.
Choose the right Photos tool for the edit
| Tool | Use it when | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Clean Up | You want to remove a distracting object. | Removes the selected object and fills the affected area. |
| Extend | You need more breathing room, a different aspect ratio, or room to straighten a horizon. | Generates image area beyond the original frame. |
| Reframe | You want to adjust the image’s perspective after taking it. | Shifts perspective; Apple says its model generates content only where the perspective changes. |
Apple describes Clean Up as improved for complex scenes and says Reframe is designed to keep the result consistent with the original scene. These are Apple’s descriptions, not independent performance findings; results can vary by image.
How to use Clean Up in Photos
- Open Photos and select a picture.
- Tap Edit → Tools → Clean Up.
- Tap, brush over, or circle the object you want to remove. Photos may highlight some objects automatically. Pinch or pan to work on details.
- Choose Auto, Fast, or High Quality processing. If you use High Quality, tap Clean Up to apply the edit.
- Tap Done, then tap Done again to close the image.
To reset a saved Clean Up edit, reopen the photo and go to Edit → Tools → Clean Up → Reset. Apple’s iPhone guide to Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe documents these controls.
How to extend a photo on iPhone
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Tools → Extend.
- Pinch or drag the photo to expand the background. Drag the frame edge to crop as needed.
- Tap Extend, then tap Done twice.
Extend creates image area outside the existing border. It can help when a composition needs extra space or a different aspect ratio, but Apple does not guarantee that every generated area will look accurate or seamless. To undo a saved edit, return to Edit → Tools → Extend → Reset.

Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence photo editing?
Apple’s iOS 27 guide lists the Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later for these editing tools. An iPhone’s ability to install iOS 27 does not by itself mean it supports Clean Up, Extend, or Reframe.
- Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region. Apple’s current guides list supported languages and note that some features are unavailable in certain languages or regions.
- Usage limits may apply to server-side Apple Intelligence features, including intelligent photo editing. Apple says limits can depend on demand, request complexity, and other factors; it does not establish a fixed daily quota for these edits.
Check Apple’s current device and feature guidance for the applicable model, language, and regional availability.
