On a Pixel 3a, open Phone → More → Settings and look for Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. If the option is available, follow the setup prompts. Google’s current instructions do not specifically confirm Pixel 3a support, so availability depends on what appears in the Phone app on your device and your country.
Check for Call Screen on your Pixel 3a

Update the Phone app if Google Play offers an update. Google’s setup instructions call for the latest version of the app.

Open Phone, tap More, then Settings.

Tap Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. Labels can vary. If you see Call Screen, open it and follow the on-screen prompts.

For automatic screening on Pixel 6 and older, including the setup path Google documents for older Pixels, select caller types under Unknown call settings. Choose the types you want screened.

If there is no Call Screen option or setup prompt, Google says the device does not work with Call Screen. Its current instructions do not specifically list the Pixel 3a, so the menu on your phone is the practical check rather than a guarantee for every 3a.
Choose manual or automatic screening

Google says not all spam or robocalls are detected, and transcripts may not fully capture what a caller says. Your saved contacts are considered when deciding whether to screen a call; saving a number as a contact prevents it from being screened.

Check country availability
Google’s current support information lists automatic Call Screen on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Manual Call Screen is listed in those countries plus France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain. Manual screening requires a SIM card from a listed country. These country lists do not establish a complete Pixel 3a, carrier, and software compatibility matrix.
A Pixel 3a owner has reported using Call Screen in a Google Phone app Community thread, but that user report is not an official current compatibility guarantee. If the feature is missing, country availability alone does not confirm that it will work on your device.

Why you may not see Screen call or automatic screening may not work
- No Call Screen setting or setup prompt: Update Phone through Google Play, then check Phone → More → Settings again. If the option remains absent, Google says the device does not work with Call Screen.
- No Screen call button: Manual screening is available only where Google supports it and requires a SIM from a listed country. If it is supported and enabled, the button appears on the incoming-call screen.
- Roaming: Automatic screening does not work while roaming, according to Google.
- Call forwarding: Screened calls will not be forwarded. Avoid automatic screening if you rely on forwarding calls.
- Recording or screen-recording apps: Google says these can interfere with Call Screen and recommends turning them off before using it.
- Headphones or Bluetooth: These may prevent automatic screening, depending on the device model.
What happens to screening audio and transcripts
Google says Call Screen transcripts and recordings are stored on your phone. After a screened call, you can choose whether to share the screening audio, transcript, and call details with Google. You can review the recording and transcript first; the information described is limited to the screening phase before you join the call.
