To raise your rate with an existing client, calculate a sustainable target, support the change with specific evidence about your work or a change in scope, and state the new rate and effective date before the next project or renewal. If the client has a firm budget, offer a smaller scope or a different project structure rather than the same work for less.
Set a defensible rate before you ask
Start with the minimum rate your business can sustain. Account for your income needs, business expenses, taxes, non-billable time, and the amount of client work you can realistically maintain. An online calculator can help organize these inputs, but its result is a planning aid—not a market rate.
Then compare your floor with recent quotes or relevant market references. For context, Upwork listed web developers at $50–$60 per hour in a guide published May 16, 2025. That is a dated, platform-published reference, not a universal rate card; location, specialty, seniority, scope, and client type all affect appropriate pricing. Upwork’s rate renegotiation guide
Build the case around this client’s work
Write down evidence that is specific to the account, such as features shipped, reliability, specialist skills applied, operational work reduced, or costs and risks avoided—only where you can substantiate the result. Also note any responsibilities or deliverables that have grown beyond the original agreement. Relevant training or skill growth helps explain a higher rate when it benefits this client’s work; a general claim that you have improved is less persuasive.

Choose the timing and check the agreement
Good moments to raise the change include a renewal, planning for the next project, a successfully completed high-value milestone, or a genuine expansion in scope. Avoid surprising a client with a new price after work is already underway unless the agreement and circumstances support a change.

Before you send a notice, check the contract’s rate-change, renewal, notice, and change-order terms. Business guidance cannot determine how a particular contract applies or replace advice about the law in your jurisdiction. Give the client advance notice so the new rate’s start date is unambiguous. A 30-day notice is one example in Upwork’s guidance; FreelancerMetrics recommends 30–60 days. Neither is a universal rule. Upwork’s guidance and FreelancerMetrics’ negotiation scripts
Make a clear request for future work
Keep the message brief. Thank the client, identify the relevant work or scope change, name the new rate, and give the date it applies to future work. Invite a discussion about the next engagement rather than implying that new terms have already been accepted.

Hi [client], I’ve valued our work on [specific work]. Based on [real outcome, relevant skill growth, or a change in scope], my rate for future work will be [new rate] beginning [date]. I’d be glad to discuss how we can shape the next project to fit your priorities and budget.

Respond to a budget objection without giving away scope
If the client says the rate is too high, ask what constraint matters most: the total budget, hourly rate, timing, or amount of work. Then propose a structure that addresses that constraint without quietly including more work than the price covers.
- Reduce deliverables: agree on a smaller, clearly defined set of work that fits the available budget.
- Split the work into phases: prioritize the most important deliverables now and schedule later work separately.
- Use a fixed-scope project: define deliverables and boundaries in advance when the work can be scoped reliably.
- Honor existing commitments: keep the agreed price for work already committed under the current terms, and discuss the new rate for future work.
These options make the trade-off explicit: a constrained budget can mean less work, a different schedule, or a different engagement structure. There is no reliable acceptance or client-retention percentage to use as a prediction for how a particular client will respond.
Upwork: scheduled increases require planning at contract start
Upwork’s scheduled rate increase feature applies to eligible non-Enterprise hourly contracts. The client and freelancer arrange the schedule when starting the contract; the client can accept, decline, or edit the proposed amount or schedule. Once accepted, the schedule applies for the contract’s duration, and the agreed schedule cannot be changed during that contract. The feature is not available for Enterprise contracts.
Upwork Help states: “No, you and your client need to schedule the rate increase at the beginning of a contract. We don’t offer the option to add one to existing contracts.” If an Upwork contract is already underway and you need to negotiate a different rate, both parties need a new contract. A scheduled increase may also be proposed when suggesting a new contract to a past or current client. These are Upwork-specific mechanics; do not assume they apply to direct agreements or other marketplaces. Upwork Help: How to propose a scheduled rate increase
