Debounce an event handler when events arrive in quick succession but the work only needs to run once after activity pauses. It is especially useful for tasks such as filtering results or requesting search suggestions while someone types. If the task must keep updating during sustained activity, use throttling or frame-aware scheduling instead.

What debouncing does

A debounced function waits for a quiet interval before invoking its callback. Each new call during that interval restarts the wait, so a burst of events can produce one trailing invocation after the burst ends. MDN describes debounce as waiting for invocations to stop, while throttling limits operations during continuous activity.

That makes debounce useful when intermediate events are not important. For example, a search field can wait until the user pauses typing before filtering results or requesting suggestions, rather than doing that work for every keystroke.

Choose debounce, throttle, or no scheduling

Situation Suitable choice Why
Search suggestions or filtering after typing Trailing debounce Intermediate values can be skipped; act after the user pauses.
Immediate response at the start of activity, optionally followed by a settled update Leading or combined-edge debounce Choose the timing that matches the desired feedback and check the implementation’s edge behavior.
Progress updates during continuous scrolling or resizing Throttle or frame-aware scheduling Work continues at controlled intervals instead of waiting indefinitely for activity to pause.
One action specifically after scrolling finishes scrollend, where appropriate It expresses completion intent directly.
A short, inexpensive handler that must respond to every event Usually no debounce Debouncing adds latency and drops intermediate invocations without a benefit when every event matters.

The decision comes down to when the work should run—immediately, periodically during activity, or after a pause—and whether intermediate events matter. Use debounce for settled-state work, not simply because an event occurs often.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to debounce a typing handler

Create the debounced callback once and retain it. If a new wrapper is constructed inside every event callback, each event can have its own timer, defeating the intended consolidation.

function debounce(callback, wait) {
  let timer;

  return function (...args) {
    clearTimeout(timer);
    timer = setTimeout(() => callback.apply(this, args), wait);
  };
}

const searchInput = document.querySelector("input");
const handleSearch = debounce((event) => {
  filterResults(event.currentTarget.value);
}, 250);

searchInput.addEventListener("input", handleSearch);

This example implements trailing behavior: calls during the wait replace the pending timer, and the callback runs after calls stop for the configured interval. The 250 milliseconds is only an example, not a universal recommendation. Set the wait according to acceptable interaction latency and tune it in the actual application.

For input fields, the browser’s input event generally tracks user-initiated value changes. Assigning to an element’s .value in code does not itself fire that event. See MDN’s input event reference.

Choose leading and trailing behavior deliberately

A trailing invocation waits for the quiet period and uses the settled state, which suits suggestions and filtering. A leading invocation can run immediately when a burst begins. Some utilities support both edges, but their precise behavior depends on the implementation and its options.

Lodash’s _.debounce documentation describes a function that delays invocation until the wait has elapsed since the debounced function was last called. Its options control leading and trailing calls; it also provides cancel to discard a pending call and flush to invoke it immediately. Check the chosen utility’s contract, including how it handles arguments, the receiver (this), and pending work.

Handle scrolling without confusing debounce and passive listeners

For work that should happen only after scrolling completes, use the scrollend event where it is appropriate for the target and browser support you require. If an update must run during scrolling, consider throttling or frame-aware scheduling rather than a trailing-only debounce, which can keep postponing work until scrolling stops.

MDN’s scroll event guidance cautions against expensive operations, such as DOM modifications, in high-rate scroll handlers and points to scrollend for detecting completion. Passive listener options are a separate concern: for cancelable events such as some wheel and touch events, passive: true tells the browser the listener will not call preventDefault(). It does not debounce or throttle the callback, and the basic scroll event itself cannot be canceled. See MDN’s addEventListener reference.
