Earbud case screens use some power while active, but published product figures do not show how much they reduce case runtime. What they can clearly add is convenience: depending on the model, you may be able to check battery status, adjust sound, control playback, or manage calls right on the case. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on whether you would use those controls.
What a screen on an earbud case can do
A touchscreen charging case can bring controls usually handled through a phone app onto the case itself. The available functions vary by model; a display may show status only, or it may offer interactive controls.
JBL Live Buds 3: more than a battery readout
JBL says the Live Buds 3’s 1.45-inch touchscreen can be used to adjust volume and EQ, control music, handle calls, view messages, and access earbud features without opening the phone app. JBL describes this as a way to “Customize every aspect of your earbuds with the 1.45-inch touchscreen display.” That is a manufacturer’s feature claim, not an independent assessment of how well the controls work in everyday use. JBL Live Buds 3 product page.
soundcore Liberty 4 Pro: status and case controls
soundcore says the Liberty 4 Pro display shows the remaining battery and charging status for both the case and earbuds, and describes touch controls on the case. Its documented functions differ from JBL’s list, so a screen’s usefulness depends on the specific controls offered—not simply on the presence of a display. soundcore Liberty 4 Pro product page.

Do earbud case screens drain the battery?
An active display consumes energy, but the cited manufacturers do not publish a screen-only power figure or a controlled comparison of runtime with the display used versus unused. Case capacity and total listening-time claims describe the combined earbud-and-case system; they do not identify how much energy goes to the display, wireless electronics, charging, or other functions.
For the JBL Live Buds 3, HARMAN/JBL lists a 620 mAh, 3.8 V case battery. JBL claims up to 10 hours of earbud playback and another 30 hours from the case, for up to 40 hours total with ANC off; it lists up to eight hours of earbud playback with ANC on. These are product-level claims, not a screen-on versus screen-off test. HARMAN/JBL Live Buds 3 specification sheet.

soundcore claims up to 30 hours with ANC on or up to 40 hours in normal mode for the Liberty 4 Pro. The company says its figures come from Anker laboratory testing at default settings and 50% volume; actual playtime varies with volume, source, interference, usage, and other factors. Those figures still do not isolate display use. soundcore Liberty 4 Pro product page.
How to compare battery claims without being misled
Playback figures from different earbuds are not a fair way to calculate what a screen costs in battery life. The models, modes, and testing conditions differ, and none of the examples below measures screen-only drain.

| Model | What the case screen or controls offer | Published battery information and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| JBL Live Buds 3 | Playback, volume, EQ, calls, messages, and earbud features, according to JBL | 620 mAh / 3.8 V case; up to 30 hours from the case and 40 hours total with ANC off. | soundcore Liberty 4 Pro | Case and earbud battery/charging status, plus case touch controls, according to soundcore | Up to 30 hours with ANC on or 40 hours in normal mode. Anker says its lab test used default settings and 50% volume; not a display-only test. |
| JX Mobile TWS26 Pro | JX Mobile markets the touchscreen case for battery checking, playback, camera triggering, and noise-reduction selection | 400 mAh case listed by the manufacturer. No comparable runtime conditions are stated here; this is a product listing, not independent validation. JX Mobile TWS26 Pro product page. |
| Xiaomi Redmi Buds 4 Active | Conventional-case reference; no case-screen function is established by the cited FAQ | 440 mAh case and approximately 20 hours with the case. Xiaomi specifies about five hours per earbud charge at 50% volume with SBC and cautions that higher volume can shorten earbud battery life. Different model, not a screen comparison. Xiaomi Redmi Buds 4 Active FAQ. |
“Up to” totals are not interchangeable: JBL’s case contribution is stated alongside an ANC-off total, while soundcore separates ANC-on and normal-mode figures and describes its laboratory conditions. Case capacity in mAh also cannot by itself tell you how much energy a screen uses or how long the case will last.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are earbuds with a screen on the case worth it?
The screen is more likely to be useful if you regularly reach for your phone to adjust sound, skip tracks, check charge status, or manage calls. If you mainly use your phone or voice controls already, a touchscreen case may add little to your routine. This is a practical inference from the controls manufacturers describe, not a published user survey.

Built-in microphones help provide clearer voice pickup, while Chinese and English voice prompts can be switched when needed. Compatible with many iOS and Android phones, tablets, laptops and other enabled devices.
To establish the battery effect for a particular model, a controlled test would need to hold the earbuds, settings, use pattern, and starting charge constant while varying screen use. Without that comparison, published case-capacity and playback figures cannot support a reliable estimate of hours lost or a universal claim that touchscreen cases drain faster.
