HomeKit Secure Video adds encrypted event recording to a compatible camera in Apple Home. A home hub analyzes video on-device, then encrypts qualifying clips before uploading them to iCloud. An iCloud+ subscription and a configured home hub are required; Apple says clips don’t use your iCloud storage quota and remain available in Home for 10 days.
What HomeKit Secure Video does—and what it adds
An Apple Home-compatible camera may let you view a live feed in the Home app. That alone does not mean it supports HomeKit Secure Video. Secure Video is the additional feature that analyzes camera footage for events and records qualifying clips to iCloud. Check a camera’s specifications for explicit HomeKit Secure Video support rather than relying on general Apple Home compatibility.
Apple describes the recordings as end-to-end encrypted. In its technical account, the home hub analyzes footage locally, encrypts qualifying clips and poster frames, and uploads them to iCloud. Apple’s description of the design is not a substitute for independent security testing.

When your viewing device is on the local network, Apple says the camera sends its video and audio directly to that device.

Live viewing away from home
For remote viewing, the encrypted live stream is relayed through the home hub. Apple says the hub relays the stream without decrypting it.
Event recording
Recording uses a separate path. According to Apple Platform Security, the hub receives camera clips over an encrypted local connection and analyzes them locally for significant events. It encrypts clips that qualify, along with their poster frames, before uploading them to iCloud. Clip metadata and keys are protected with iCloud end-to-end encryption. This is Apple’s documented architecture, not a claim based on independent testing.

What iCloud+ plan and camera limits apply?
Apple’s published HomeKit Secure Video rules, in its current guide accessed in 2026, set the number of cameras by iCloud+ plan. The recording clips do not count against the plan’s iCloud storage quota.

Apple says you can review the last 10 days of camera activity in Home. Plan offerings and terms can change, so check Apple’s current guide for the rules that apply when you set up your cameras.

What you need to set it up
- A camera that explicitly supports HomeKit Secure Video.
- An iCloud+ subscription held by you or someone in your Family Sharing group.
- A home hub set up for your Apple Home.
- An iPhone or iPad to add the security camera to Home.
Apple says you can view footage on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. Devices need to use the same Apple Account with Home enabled for viewing and sharing.
- Set up a home hub and make sure you or a Family Sharing member has iCloud+.
- On your iPhone or iPad, add the compatible camera to Home.
- In the Home app, configure whether the camera streams and records when people are home or away, and choose the alerts and motion settings you want.

- Home and Away modes: Choose whether the camera streams and records when people are home or away.
- Motion alerts: Set notifications for motion. With supported Secure Video features, Home can distinguish people, animals, vehicles, or delivered packages.
- Activity Zones: Select parts of the image to focus detection on. Zones apply to cameras set to record a specific type of motion; they do not change motion-detection automations.
- Shared access: Invite other iCloud users and control whether they can view recordings, stream remotely, or manage cameras. Shared users can view live streams while at home, and Family Sharing members can add cameras to the home.
What Apple’s privacy claims mean
Apple Support describes the service this way: “It’s all end-to-end encrypted, and none of the video counts towards your iCloud storage.” Its technical documentation explains the distinction behind that summary: live streams are sent directly on the local network or relayed in encrypted form for remote viewing, while the home hub analyzes recording footage locally and encrypts clips before upload. Apple says the system is designed to let people record, analyze, and view clips without exposing video content to Apple or third parties.
These statements describe Apple’s published design and product claims; they should not be read as an independent audit or test result.

How to check whether a camera is compatible
Look for the words “HomeKit Secure Video” in the specifications for the exact camera model. A listing of Apple Home compatibility alone is not enough to establish Secure Video support. Apple’s camera accessory catalog includes options such as Eve Outdoor Cam, which Apple describes as designed exclusively for HomeKit Secure Video; verify the individual model’s current compatibility and availability before buying.
