Which time limit applies to the bottle?

These are separate clocks, not extra time to add together. The one-hour limit starts when feeding begins; it does not extend the two-hour period after preparation. CDC gives these limits in its Infant Formula Preparation and Storage guidance, dated May 14, 2026.
How should you store formula if feeding is delayed?
If you have prepared a bottle but will not feed the baby right away, put it in the refrigerator immediately. CDC says refrigerated prepared formula should be used within 24 hours. If you cannot remember how long it has been refrigerated, do not feed it to the baby; discard it. See CDC’s Cronobacter prevention guidance.
Why must you discard a bottle after feeding?
Once the baby has fed from the bottle, saliva can get into the formula and allow germs to grow. Discard whatever remains rather than refrigerating it or offering it at another feeding. An untouched bottle refrigerated promptly is different: it may be used within the 24-hour refrigerated window.

What if there is no working refrigerator?
During a power outage or another emergency without a working refrigerator, prepare fresh formula for each feeding rather than storing prepared bottles. The CDC’s emergency infant feeding guidance also reiterates the two-hour limit after preparation and the one-hour limit after feeding begins.
Does warming or the bottle type change the time limit?
No. Warming a bottle or using a particular bottle does not extend either time limit. Formula does not need to be warmed. If you choose to warm it, CDC says not to use a microwave because it can heat unevenly and create hot spots; warm running water is an option. Follow the formula container’s mixing directions and use the exact amount of water specified. More preparation details are in the CDC’s formula preparation and storage guidance.

Extra preparation precautions for some babies
Powdered formula is not sterile. CDC advises extra precautions for babies younger than two months, born prematurely, or with weakened immune systems, who may be at greater risk of serious illness from germs such as Cronobacter. Its current guidance describes mixing powdered formula with very hot water and cooling it before feeding for these higher-risk infants. Preparation recommendations can also depend on water safety and the infant’s circumstances, so consult the CDC’s Cronobacter prevention guidance and your health professional for advice specific to your baby.
