Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and Microsoft Defender Antivirus do different jobs: SmartScreen uses reputation signals to warn about potentially risky websites, downloads, apps, and files; Defender Antivirus scans and protects the device against malware. They complement one another, so SmartScreen does not replace antivirus. “Windows Defender Antivirus” is a familiar older name for Microsoft Defender Antivirus, while Windows Security is the app that brings these and other protections together.

How SmartScreen and Defender Antivirus differ

Protection What it checks When it acts Where to find its settings
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Reputation of websites, downloads, and apps or files from the web; it can warn about reported phishing or malicious sites, known unsafe programs, and unfamiliar downloads. While browsing, downloading, or opening web-sourced apps and files. Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection; in Edge, Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus Files and programs for viruses and other malware, including ransomware. Real-time protection monitors files and programs as they are accessed or run; users can also start manual scans. Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.

Microsoft describes the SmartScreen setting this way: “This toggle turns on Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to evaluate the reputation of apps and files you may download from the web.” Microsoft Support: App & browser control in the Windows Security App.

Does SmartScreen replace antivirus?

No. SmartScreen focuses on reputation-based warnings around browsing and web-sourced content. Defender Antivirus provides malware protection on the device, including real-time monitoring and on-demand scans. A SmartScreen alert by itself does not mean antivirus is disabled or that the computer is infected; it means Windows or Edge has raised a concern about the reputation of a site, download, or app.

Windows Security is the umbrella app, not another name for either feature. It also contains areas such as Firewall and Smart App Control. Smart App Control is a separate feature: Microsoft says it is unavailable in Windows 10 and can be enabled only on new Windows 11 installations subject to its documented requirements. Do you need both?

They address different parts of the risk, so they are not substitutes. Leave both protections available unless an administrator manages the device or a specific configuration changes what is active. Microsoft says that installing a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus program automatically turns Microsoft Defender Antivirus off; its documentation does not say that this antivirus handoff disables SmartScreen. Check SmartScreen separately rather than assuming its status from the antivirus provider. Microsoft Support: Virus and threat protection in the Windows Security App.

Where to find the controls in Windows and Edge

SmartScreen in Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select App & browser control, then Reputation-based protection.
  3. Review the available checks, including the option for apps and files downloaded from the web.

SmartScreen in Microsoft Edge

  1. In Edge, open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy, search, and services, then Security.
  3. Review the SmartScreen controls shown for that browser.

Antivirus scans

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose a scan option appropriate to the concern: quick, full, custom, or Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan.

Security intelligence updates for the built-in antivirus arrive through Windows Update. Exact controls can vary by Windows release, configuration, and organizational management; work or school devices may have settings controlled by an administrator. Microsoft’s guidance covers the built-in Windows Security experience in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but individual screens can differ. What to do when a warning appears

If SmartScreen flags a site or download

Read the warning rather than treating it as proof of infection. Verify the site address and the download’s source before proceeding. Edge provides options to report a site as safe or unsafe and to report a download that you believe was incorrectly flagged. A false positive is possible, but override a warning only after checking the source and destination carefully. Microsoft Support: What is SmartScreen and how can it help protect me?

If you suspect a suspicious file or infection

Start in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a suitable scan. SmartScreen’s reputation warning and an antivirus scan answer different questions: the first concerns whether web-sourced content is known or trusted, while the second checks the device for malware.

If you are concerned about potentially unwanted apps

A potentially unwanted app (PUA) is not necessarily malware. Microsoft notes that PUAs may show unwanted ads, use the PC for cryptomining, or bundle unexpected software. Windows reputation-based protections can help address this category. Microsoft Support: Protect your PC from potentially unwanted applications

Should you turn off real-time protection to troubleshoot?

Do not use disabling protection as a routine shortcut. Microsoft notes that files opened or downloaded while real-time protection is off are not scanned by that real-time feature. If you need to investigate a SmartScreen warning, verify the source and use the report option when appropriate instead of switching off antivirus protection. On managed devices, consult the administrator before changing settings.
