Call of Duty prepares shaders so your graphics card can render the game’s surfaces, lighting, shadows, and effects using programs suited to your PC. Compiling them before play can add waiting time at launch, but may reduce stutters during a match. If compilation is still running when you start playing, performance may be affected. The details—and the right advice—vary by game and PC storefront.
What shader compilation does
Shaders are small programs that tell the GPU how to render visual elements. Activision describes them as handling everything from surfaces and lighting to shadows and visual effects. On consoles, developers can target a more standardized hardware configuration. PCs vary across graphics cards, drivers, and system setups, so some shader work must be prepared for a particular configuration. Activision’s explanation of shader preloading covers the process for the Modern Warfare 4 Beta.

The timing matters. Compiling shaders on the device at launch can lengthen loading; compiling them just in time during play can interrupt rendering and cause shader-compilation stutter. Microsoft describes this trade-off in its Advanced Shader Delivery documentation. That platform feature has specific Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront prerequisites; its documentation does not establish that any particular Call of Duty release uses it.
How shaders can affect performance
Before your first match
Preloading moves some work ahead of gameplay, so you may wait longer before playing. Activision says Modern Warfare 4 Beta preloading is intended to reduce the wait between launching the game and entering the first match. This is a trade-off: more preparation before play can mean less shader work left to do during it.

During a match
If a game compiles a shader just as it is needed, the work can interrupt frame delivery and appear as a hitch or stutter. That is a general possibility, not a diagnosis for every Call of Duty performance problem. The available official sources do not quantify a general FPS loss or establish that all stutters are caused by shaders.
If preloading is unfinished
Activision’s Modern Warfare PC troubleshooting guidance says players can enter a game while shaders are still preloading, but warns that performance might be affected. On that support page, an orange indicator means compilation is ongoing; a red in-game indicator means it is ongoing and creating performance issues. Do not assume other Call of Duty games use the same colors or indicators.

If you leave the menu early
For Black Ops 6 on PC, Activision says navigating away from the Main Menu stops preloading and can lead to performance issues. Its Black Ops 6 PC troubleshooting guidance recommends letting the first-boot process finish before playing.
What to do when Call of Duty is compiling shaders
- Follow the instructions for your specific game and storefront. There is no single process that applies to every Call of Duty release.
- For Black Ops 6 on PC, let first-boot preloading finish. Stay in the Main Menu while it runs, as Activision recommends.
- For the Modern Warfare 4 Beta, check which launcher you use. Activision’s August 19, 2026 article says Battle.net preloading begins with Beta installation. On Steam, a one-time shader compile is still required on first boot; preloading applies to subsequent updates. These details describe the Beta, not a universal rule for older or other releases.
- Wait if the game’s own indicator shows compilation is active. Use indicator meanings only for the title whose official guidance documents them.
- If problems persist after compilation, follow that title’s official troubleshooting steps. Activision’s Black Ops 6 guidance includes platform-specific steps for drivers, file repair, and background software. Check the support page for current driver recommendations rather than relying on versions that may have become outdated.
What to expect from the Modern Warfare 4 Beta’s preload options
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 Beta players can disable background preloading or interrupt it; in either case, preloading resumes in-game. The article also says the full benefit is expected after launch as the game moves into its seasonal update cadence. These are Beta-era statements, so they should not be taken as a description of every Call of Duty game or its current release behavior.

Activision’s older Modern Warfare support page lists historical average preloading durations for specific PC configurations, but the publication year is unclear. Those figures are not a reliable current estimate for your PC. No general compile-time or FPS-impact figure is established by the cited guidance.

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery documentation describes a platform capability that prepares shaders ahead of time and delivers them with a download, rather than compiling them on the player’s device at launch or during gameplay. It requires a supported Windows version, capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. The documentation alone does not show that a given Call of Duty title supports the feature, so do not treat it as a setting you can enable for every release.
