It does not necessarily stop the provider from processing your prompt to generate a response, retaining it for a stated period, reviewing it for safety, or handling it for support or legal purposes. The scope depends on the provider, setting, and account type.
What an AI-training opt-out does—and does not—mean
“Training” is only one reason a service may handle your data. A provider still needs to process a prompt to return an answer, and its terms may allow other processing for service operation, safety, security, support, or legal compliance. Those activities are distinct from using content to improve a model.
Also check when a control takes effect. A setting may apply to future conversations rather than content already submitted. The provider guidance below does not establish that opting out retroactively removes earlier content from models that have already been trained.
How the controls differ across popular AI services
These examples reflect official guidance for the named services checked on October 3, 2026. Policies can change, and a consumer-account setting should not be assumed to govern a business, API, or administrator-managed account.

Feedback, safety review, and deletion are separate from opting out
Feedback can bring content into a different process
Submitting a rating or other feedback may allow the provider to collect or use associated content under separate rules. OpenAI says opted-out users may still send feedback. Google says feedback can cause associated content to be collected, reviewed, and retained under separate rules. Anthropic describes feedback and safety-flagged conversations as possible inputs for specific improvement or safeguards purposes. Check what the service says about the particular feedback action before submitting it.
Retention does not necessarily end when activity is deleted
Turning off training, deleting chat history, and controlling retention are different actions. Google’s guidance gives specific examples: chats with Keep Activity off are retained for 72 hours for stated service purposes, and chats selected for human review may be retained for up to three years even after activity is deleted. Anthropic’s up-to-five-year period applies to de-identified data in training pipelines for eligible chats when improvement use is allowed, not to every chat. Do not assume deleting a conversation reverses prior review or use in a training pipeline unless the provider explicitly says it does.

Human review is not the same thing as model training
A provider’s ability to review some content for safety or service purposes does not, by itself, show that it is training on every conversation covered by an opt-out. Treat human review, operational processing, and model improvement as separate uses, and read the policy for each.
Business and school accounts may follow different rules
OpenAI says data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare, ChatGPT for Teachers, and its API platform is not used to train or improve models by default. It also describes other business privacy options, including configurable retention for qualifying organizations. Anthropic directs commercial users to its commercial terms rather than relying on consumer-product guidance. Google says work or school account settings may be controlled by an administrator. For confidential work, use the AI service approved by your organization and follow its contractual and administrator-managed controls rather than relying on a personal-account toggle.

- Which account and product? Confirm whether you are using a consumer app, business plan, API, or employer- or school-managed account.
- What does the setting cover? Look for whether it applies to future conversations, previously submitted content, or both.
- What happens when you send feedback? Find out whether the rating or report may include the conversation or associated content.
- What exceptions are listed? Read separately for safety, abuse, security, support, and legal processing.
- How long is data retained? Check whether ordinary chats, feedback-associated content, or human-reviewed chats have different periods.
- What does deletion remove? Determine whether it affects stored activity, reviewed copies, or content already used in a training pipeline.
The named providers’ policies establish no universal rule for every AI company or jurisdiction. Verify the current wording and settings for the exact service and account you use.
