Start with the people who can access your home, then review camera permissions and recording behavior. If you have a compatible HomeKit router, decide whether its network restrictions suit each accessory. Apple’s controls can limit access, but the right choices depend on whether you share your home, use cameras, need remote access, or have compatible router hardware.

Review who can access your home

In the Home app, go to Home > More > Home Settings > People. Check each resident and guest, including whether they need remote access or permission to change the home’s setup. Apple’s role and sharing options are described in its guide to sharing control of your home.

Residents: limit remote and editing access

Residents can access all accessories locally, and an owner can allow or disable their remote access. The owner can also decide whether a resident may add or edit accessories. Give those permissions only to people who need them; in particular, avoid granting editing rights by default.

Guests: use narrower, scheduled access

Guests can be limited to selected security accessories, local-only access, and a schedule. This is a more restricted option when someone needs temporary access rather than control of the whole home. Remote access and guest access require a home hub.

Remove access in both Home and accessory apps

When someone no longer needs access, remove them under Home > More > Home Settings > People. Apple warns that removing someone from Home may not remove access granted separately in an accessory manufacturer’s app. Check that app and revoke access there where applicable. See Apple’s sharing and removal guidance.

Set camera permissions and recording deliberately

Choose what each shared person can see and manage

Go to Home > More > Home Settings > People > [person] > Cameras. Review permissions for live streams, recordings, remote viewing, and camera management. Invited people can view live streams while at home; the owner controls whether they can view recordings, stream remotely, or manage cameras. Apple explains these controls in its HomeKit Secure Video guide.

Set different recording behavior for home and away

For each HomeKit Secure Video camera, review its options for When Home and When Away. For example, you can stop an indoor camera from recording while household members are home while continuing to record outdoors. The Home app uses members’ device locations to determine whether the home is in the home or away state, so these recording choices depend on location-based presence—not just a camera’s own schedule. Apple describes the options in its guide to setting up security cameras in Home.

Know what Secure Video includes and requires

HomeKit Secure Video requires iCloud+ and a home hub. Apple says footage is end-to-end encrypted, analyzed by the home hub, available for the last 10 days, and does not count against iCloud storage. Apple’s current support guide lists these camera allowances by iCloud+ plan:

Use Activity Zones for more focused alerts

Activity Zones let you select regions in a camera’s field of view to focus recording alerts. Apple says they are available only when the camera records a specific motion, and they do not affect motion-detection automations. They are not privacy masks: do not assume that areas outside a zone are never observed. Details are in Apple’s camera setup guide.

Consider router restrictions if you have compatible hardware

With a configured compatible router, go to Home > More > Home Settings > Wi-Fi Network & Routers, then select an accessory. This control requires both a compatible router and a home hub; it is not available to every Home user. Apple describes setup and the access levels in its guide to routers secured with HomeKit.

Setting What it permits Trade-off
Restrict to Home The accessory can interact with HomeKit through Apple devices; internet and access to other local devices are blocked. Third-party services, including firmware updates, may be blocked. Choose this only if you accept that possible loss.
Automatic HomeKit connections and connections recommended by the accessory manufacturer. This is Apple’s default balance between HomeKit access and manufacturer-recommended connections.
No Restriction Connections to any device on the network or an internet service. This allows the broadest network access of the three choices.

Understand Apple’s built-in protections—and their limits

Apple says HomeKit data for homes on the new architecture syncs through iCloud with end-to-end encryption and is not accessible by Apple. Its security documentation also describes commands to a home hub as end-to-end encrypted and authenticated before the hub forwards them to accessories through HomeKit Accessory Protocol or Matter. Separately, Apple says users control whether third-party apps can access Home data through Privacy settings. These are Apple’s descriptions of its system design, not independent audit findings. They do not replace reviewing people, camera permissions, or app access.
