Its appeal rests chiefly on the duo’s chemistry; early reviews split over whether that pairing can carry a story critics often found slight. Production paused after the original showrunner left, but the available reporting does not establish that the change caused the weaknesses reviewers describe.
What Brothers is about
Apple’s premise turns a playful question about its stars into scripted fiction: after Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he takes his family to Matthew’s Austin ranch. Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, lets slip that the longtime friends might be brothers. Woody pursues the family mystery while Matthew considers a possible run for governor of Texas. ( Apple TV Press)
The actors are not presented as playing themselves in a documentary. They play fictionalized versions of themselves, and the possible family connection belongs to the show’s story; the sources cited here do not establish that McConaughey and Harrelson are biologically related.
Why production paused—and what the handoff establishes
On June 20, 2025, TheWrap reported that filming in Austin had paused after David West Read left over creative differences about how to end the season. Eight of the ten episodes then ordered had been shot, and a return date had not yet been set. Lee Eisenberg was reported to be in talks to replace him. (TheWrap)

By June 2026, Variety reported that Eisenberg had replaced Read. Apple’s June 18 release credits Eisenberg as showrunner and executive producer, with Read among the executive producers. The released season has eight episodes, rather than the ten reported as ordered during the pause. The cited sources do not explain the change in episode count, so it should not be attributed to the showrunner handoff. (Variety; Apple TV Press)
The sequence is clear: a departure, a production pause, and a later credited replacement. It does not prove that the change produced the storytelling choices critics later praised or criticized.

What reviewers liked—and where they disagreed
The recurring point of agreement is the central pairing. Reviews recognize the pleasure of watching two familiar screen personalities play heightened versions of themselves, but differ on whether the series gives that chemistry enough story to sustain eight episodes.
- The chemistry: Tom’s Guide’s Kelly Woo rated the series 3/5, praising the leads’ rapport while finding the story too slight for the season’s length. (Tom’s Guide)
- The thin premise: The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager called it a “frustratingly thin affair,” arguing that the brotherhood hook receives a tepid treatment. (The Daily Beast)
- The split over tone: IGN rated the show 5/10, while Common Sense Media gave it 4/5 and enjoyed its fact-versus-fiction hook. The contrast reflects differing responses to the show’s premise and style, not a unanimous critical verdict. (Rotten Tomatoes)
Other reactions in the reviewed roundup were more favorable, including descriptions of the series as an amiable hangout comedy. The useful question is not simply whether the premise sounds funny, but whether you enjoy the stars’ on-screen ease enough to make a relatively light story work for you.

A MacDailyNews roundup published October 1, 2026 reported a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of about 62% from 39 reviews at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a score guaranteed to remain current; the score and review count can change as reviews are added. (MacDailyNews)
The figure summarizes critics’ reviews, not audience polling. The sources reviewed do not establish a broad viewer-sentiment measure or a viewership total, so neither can be inferred from the critics score.
