Then check which browser session it can use, whether that session is authorized to reach the page, and whether the page has finished rendering before capture. These are separate failure layers, so changing screenshot settings will not fix a missing tool or blocked sign-in.
Diagnose the failure in the right order
Use the tool’s exact error message to identify where the process stops: before navigation, while connecting to the browser, during page access, or after the page appears. Work through these checks in order; the steps below name platform-specific controls where documented, but labels and capabilities vary by agent.
- Tool availability: Does the agent have browser navigation and screenshot tools in its available tool list?
- Session and identity: Is it using a browser session that has the required sign-in state?
- Access and connection: Can that session reach the domain, and do its permissions and browser connection work?
- Page readiness: Did navigation finish, and has dynamic content rendered before capture?
- Rendering: Is the page visible in the browser but missing or black in the screenshot?
For AWS AgentCore, the browser troubleshooting guide lists a default session timeout of 900 seconds (15 minutes); this is a service-specific default, not a general browser setting. AWS: Troubleshoot AgentCore Browser
Confirm the agent has browser tools
If browser tools are missing or unavailable to the agent, a different prompt will not create them. In Visual Studio Code, check that workbench.browser.enableChatTools is enabled, that the built-in Browser tools are selected in the chat tool configuration, and that an administrator policy has not disabled them. - If navigation is available but screenshot capture is not, check whether the agent has a separate screenshot or page-inspection tool.
- If neither is available, enable or select the appropriate tool, or use an agent/browser integration that provides it.
- Once the tools are available, ask the agent to open the target URL and capture it; investigate the next layer if it still fails.
Check which browser session the agent can access
An agent’s browser may be isolated from your regular browser tabs. Visual Studio Code states: “By default, an agent can’t access browser pages that you opened.” An agent-opened page also does not automatically inherit your normal browser’s cookies or storage. For a public page
Have the agent open the URL in its own browser session. If the page fails there, continue to the access, network, and readiness checks below.
For a page that requires sign-in
In VS Code, open the authenticated page in the integrated browser and choose Share with Agent. This lets the agent work with that tab instead of assuming it can access your ordinary browser session. You can unshare the page later. Do not send passwords or session cookies to the agent as a substitute for the supported sharing flow. Visual Studio Code: Use browser tools with agents

Separate authorization problems from network blocks
A page can be unreachable because of a domain filter or organization policy, or because the browser service is not authorized to use the requested resource. These are different problems: a working browser connection does not prove the agent is permitted to visit the site, and permission to use the service does not prove the network allows the domain.
In Visual Studio Code
Check the browser tool’s error and your organization’s domain filtering or policy settings. If the restriction comes from an administrator or site owner, use an approved route rather than trying to bypass it. Visual Studio Code: Use browser tools with agents
In AWS AgentCore
Confirm the IAM identity has the browser permissions required by your setup, and check that credentials point to the intended AWS account. Verify the browser session started and is still active; AgentCore’s cited troubleshooting guide gives sessionTimeoutSeconds a default of 900 seconds. If the session has timed out, establish a new one rather than treating a stale session as a page-rendering fault. AWS: Troubleshoot AgentCore Browser

Check browser startup and automation transport
If the tool reports a browser-connection or Playwright WebSocket error, investigate the automation setup before debugging the target webpage. For the AWS AgentCore Playwright connection pattern, check that Playwright is installed, the browser session is active, and the network permits WebSocket connections. These checks are specific to that managed-service pattern; other providers may have different connection requirements. AWS: Troubleshoot AgentCore Browser
- Browser did not start: Check session creation and service permissions.
- Session is no longer active: Start or reconnect to a current session.
- Playwright cannot connect: Verify the library installation and the service’s documented connection method.
- WebSocket connection fails: Check whether network controls permit the required WebSocket traffic.
Wait for the page to render before taking the screenshot
Successful navigation does not necessarily mean the page is visually ready. A site may load its main document before JavaScript-driven content, images, or other elements appear. Use the wait condition that matches the task: a load event for a straightforward page, or a specific visible result or first rendered frame for a dynamic page. Avoid relying on an arbitrary short delay when you can wait for the content the screenshot must show.
Example using agent-browser
The agent-browser documentation describes opening a URL, waiting for the load event, and then taking a screenshot. Exact command options can depend on the installed version and setup; consult its documentation for the syntax supported by your environment.

Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering documentation describes inspecting navigation, DOM, screenshots, network, and console state; those capabilities can help distinguish a failed load from a page that loaded but did not render the expected content. When an overlay blocks a click
If a cookie prompt, modal, or other overlay covers the intended target, use the tool’s reported covering-element information to handle the overlay. Then take a fresh DOM or element snapshot before reusing element references: the page may have changed, making earlier references stale. Do not repeatedly click an obscured target without updating the page state. agent-browser documentation

If the browser displays the page but the captured image is black or empty, navigation may have succeeded while rendering or capture failed. First compare headless and headed capture, then check whether the page uses a special canvas or graphics path.

The agent-browser project documents a specific headless WebGPU screenshot caveat on Windows and Linux. It notes that headless Chrome lacks WebGPU by default, describes a --webgpu preset, and documents an additional screenshot-capture limitation for WebGPU canvases on those operating systems. Try headed capture or the documented WebGPU configuration only when the tool, operating system, and page match that case; these are not general fixes for blank screenshots. agent-browser documentation
Stop at human-verification challenges
A CAPTCHA or similar human-verification prompt is an access boundary, not a rendering bug to work around. AWS recognizes that an agent may be unable to proceed when a CAPTCHA requires human verification. For a legitimate workflow, use a site-provided API or supported integration, or have a person complete the challenge. Do not attempt to evade the check. AWS: Troubleshoot AgentCore Browser

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t my AI agent open a webpage?
Common causes include missing browser tools, an isolated session, a sign-in requirement, domain or organization restrictions, missing service permissions, or a disconnected browser session. The tool error and the stage where it occurs help narrow down which one applies.
Why is my browser agent screenshot blank?
First establish whether the page itself rendered. If it did, test headed versus headless capture and check for a page-specific rendering path such as WebGPU. The documented WebGPU limitation applies to particular agent-browser conditions, not all blank screenshots.
