To screenshot a page behind a login, have an AI agent use an authorized browser session: sign in through the site’s normal flow, verify that authentication succeeded, open the protected page, verify the page loaded, and then capture it. A screenshot request alone cannot log in. With Playwright, you can keep the session alive for a one-off task or save its authentication state for later runs.
Choose how the agent will access the signed-in browser
First decide whether the agent should create and control its own browser context or use a page you have already signed in to. Do not assume an agent-created page shares cookies with your regular browser.

For the examples below, the agent controls a Playwright browser. Replace the example URLs, selectors, and credentials with values for a service and account you are authorized to use.
Sign in, verify the session, and capture with Playwright
The key safety check is to verify a successful login before saving state or taking the screenshot. A click on a sign-in button is not proof: authentication may involve several redirects or delayed cookies. }Run it with environment variables set in your shell or secret manager. The example’s selectors and dashboard path are placeholders for the target service’s real login flow; do not treat them as universal site conventions. If the site uses a one-time code, passkey, CAPTCHA, or other interactive verification, complete its authorized flow using the browser capability available to you rather than attempting to bypass it.
Reusable state for a later run
If a later process needs to start already authenticated, save Playwright storage state only after verifying login, then load it into a new context. The state can contain cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication data. It may expire, and a file containing it can be enough to impersonate the account.

}Keep the state file in a private, access-controlled location and exclude it from version control, for example by adding playwright/.auth/ to .gitignore. Refresh it when it expires or the site invalidates the session. Playwright does not persist sessionStorage through the ordinary storage-state file; if the site relies on it, use a domain-scoped custom save-and-restore step as described in the authentication guide.
Pick the screenshot scope you need

For visual inspection, a screenshot shows layout and appearance; it is not a substitute for an accessibility snapshot when the task is to understand page structure or text. Playwright describes the two as complementary tools.
Protect the session and screenshot
Authentication state and screenshots can both expose sensitive information. Playwright warns that saved browser state may contain cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate an account. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance likewise says screenshot output may include sensitive page or account data and should be shown only to authorized users and kept out of application logs: OpenAI computer-use guidance.

- Use an account and page the agent is authorized to access; scope the session to the intended task.
- Restrict access to saved state files and captured images. Do not commit state files or print secrets and page contents into logs.
- Delete or refresh state when it is no longer needed or has expired.
- When tests alter server-side data or authentication is browser-specific, use separate accounts rather than letting parallel tests share one account.

Not necessarily. Browser tools may create isolated sessions; use explicit page sharing or a supported session-transfer method rather than assuming cookies are shared.
