Turn off single-track repeat, then use a playlist with several distinct recordings and enable shuffle or autoplay to the next item. A sleep timer controls when playback stops; it does not add variety.
First, identify what is repeating
Players commonly offer two different repeat modes: repeat the current track, or repeat the full album or playlist. If the same meditation starts over immediately, look for a single-track repeat indicator and switch it off. If tracks change but familiar ones return quickly, the queue may be short, contain duplicates, or be set to repeat the playlist.
There is no documented recurrence interval that shuffle guarantees. The dependable cross-service fix is to build a longer finite playlist of distinct sessions, remove duplicates, and use the player’s shuffle or next-track control.
Set up YouTube Music
The following controls are documented in YouTube Music’s computer help instructions; labels and steps may differ on Android or iPhone, so check the current controls in your app.

- Open the album or playlist containing the sleep meditations and choose Shuffle play, or turn on Shuffle while it is playing.
- Check Repeat. The repeat control can target the current song or the whole album or playlist. If the number “1” appears on the repeat icon, the current song is set to repeat; change that setting if you want other tracks to play.
- Review the source of playback. YouTube Music notes that when a specific song, video, artist shuffle, or mix is selected, only the current item can be repeated. Start from the intended playlist or album if you want the full collection to vary.
- For your full library on computer, use Library → Songs → Shuffle all if that is the collection you want to hear.

Use Calm’s autoplay and sleep-list controls
Calm’s Help Center, updated April 28, 2026, documents a Music autoplay choice between repeating the current song and advancing to the next song on the album or playlist. Select the advance option when you want tracks to continue without replaying the same one. Calm also provides curated Sleep Playlists, which its Help Center describes as about 3–5 hours long; that duration is specific to those playlists, not a guarantee about other collections.

Calm distinguishes music playlists from guided content. A Scene timer controls background sound, while a Sleep Story does not itself have a sleep timer. The setting Play sounds outside the app determines how long a background Scene continues after a meditation or story ends. If your goal is to hear ambience after guided content, check that setting rather than expecting the story itself to loop as a playlist.

Set a Spotify sleep timer without confusing it for shuffle
Spotify’s timer stops playback; it does not prevent a track from repeating before the timer expires. Spotify’s Newsroom instructions, originally published August 2, 2022, describe opening Now Playing, choosing Sleep Timer from the music menu, and selecting a duration from 5 minutes through 1 hour or Until the end of the track. The article also covers podcast timers and checking the remaining time. An update dated August 29, 2025 says the timer can be controlled from mobile, desktop, and Wear OS and can stop playback on nearly any device, including speakers, TVs, and game consoles.
For variety, pair a timer with a sufficiently varied playlist and the player’s shuffle or next-track setting. Spotify describes the timer as a way to choose how long music or a podcast episode plays before stopping; it is not a track-rotation setting. See Spotify’s Sleep Timer instructions.

Check BetterSleep’s playback mode before relying on repeat
BetterSleep documents timers for sound mixes and for meditations or SleepTales. For guided content, its Repeat control is available only when Keep music playing is set to a timer duration or Indefinitely. Consult BetterSleep’s timer instructions for the relevant playback settings.
If you use the sleep tracker
BetterSleep says its separate sleep-tracking mode does not support external timers or guided-content Repeat, and playlists are incompatible with that mode. Sounds paired with a SleepTale or meditation stop when that content ends. Do not assume ordinary playback controls will behave the same way inside tracking; see BetterSleep’s sleep-tracking limitations.

Choose the right fix for your goal

Troubleshoot when it still repeats
- The same track starts over immediately: inspect Repeat for a single-track indicator and turn it off.
- Tracks change, but the same few keep returning: check the playlist for duplicates or a small queue, add more distinct recordings, and shuffle the full playlist rather than a single selected item or mix.
- Playback stops earlier than expected: check whether a timer is set to a short duration or to stop at the end of the current track.
- Autoplay does not continue: confirm that the app is set to advance to the next item, not replay the current song; Calm documents this choice for Music autoplay.
- Controls seem unavailable during tracking: verify whether the app’s sleep-tracking mode disables playlists, timers, or repeat. BetterSleep documents these restrictions for its tracker.
- Instructions do not match your screen: controls can vary by device, plan, region, and app release. The YouTube Music steps above are for computer; confirm current labels on your device.
