Set HandBrake’s Destination to a folder on a connected external drive before you start encoding. Then check that the drive has enough free space, run a representative test encode to estimate time and output size, and prevent the PC from sleeping while the job runs. Encoding time and file size depend on your source, settings, and hardware, so a test is more reliable than a promise that a long video will finish overnight.
Choose where the encoded video will be saved
- Open the source in HandBrake. If it contains more than one title, select the title you intend to encode.
- Choose a playback-appropriate preset. For general computer playback or an unknown target, HandBrake describes Fast 1080p30 as a broad-compatibility starting point. It is not necessarily the best setting for every source or playback device. See HandBrake’s official presets.
- Set the output location. In the Destination field, use Browse to choose a folder on an external hard drive or portable SSD, then set the output filename. HandBrake defines Destination as the output filename and location; its Starting encoding guide explains the selection.
- Check the drive before starting. Make sure the volume is mounted, writable, has free capacity, and will remain connected and powered for the whole encode. These are practical precautions: selecting a destination does not guarantee the drive will stay available.
- Confirm the path and filename. Make sure the destination is the external drive rather than a folder on the PC’s internal drive.
If you need more room or want finished files off the internal drive, an external drive is one option. Choose capacity based on a test encode rather than an assumed file size, and leave the drive connected until the job is complete.
Estimate whether the encode can finish overnight
HandBrake warns that encoding uses substantial computer resources and that some videos take minutes while others take hours. Duration alone does not determine completion time: resolution, content complexity, selected settings, and the machine all matter. HandBrake does not provide a dependable duration-to-encode-time formula, so avoid treating any estimate as a guarantee.
Run a representative test
- Use the intended preset and settings on a short section representative of the full video.
- Note the encoding speed HandBrake reports and the size of the resulting test file.
- Use those observations as a cautious guide to the full job’s likely runtime and storage needs. A different scene or sustained workload may encode at a different rate or produce a different file size.
- Keep additional free space available because the final output size is uncertain. Check the actual output size and playback before removing or moving the source.
Encoder settings trade off speed, visual quality, output size, and compatibility. HandBrake’s quality documentation describes those choices; there is no universally best setting independent of the source and intended playback device.

Keep the PC and destination available overnight
Prevent the computer from sleeping for the duration of the job using your operating system’s normal power settings. This is general operating-system advice, not a HandBrake-specific setting documented in its encoding guide. Keep the external drive connected and powered, and check that HandBrake’s progress advances and the output appears at the expected location before leaving the job unattended.
Queue multiple videos without overwriting files
For several encodes, add jobs to HandBrake’s queue and use automatic naming that includes the title. HandBrake says this gives each queued job a unique filename so jobs do not overwrite one another; still verify that filenames and destination paths are distinct. See the queue guide.

Hardware encoding: faster, when supported
HandBrake’s hardware presets are designed for speed, but are available only when the required hardware and drivers are detected. Hardware encoding does not eliminate every CPU task, and it is not automatically the right choice for every quality, file-size, or compatibility target. Compare the result from a short test rather than assuming hardware encoding will be faster in every part of the workflow or produce the same visual quality at the same size as a software encode. HandBrake’s NVENC documentation describes one hardware-encoding path and its availability constraints.
What HandBrake’s storage and memory figures mean
HandBrake lists 150 MB for the application and minimum system memory of 16 GB for standard and high-definition transcoding and 32 GB for 4K transcoding. These are application-storage and system-memory requirements, not estimates of encoded-video size or the free space your output needs. See HandBrake system requirements.

Troubleshoot an overnight encode
- The output is still going to the PC drive: Stop and confirm the Destination path points to the external volume before restarting. Check the path again after choosing Browse.
- The drive is unavailable or the job cannot write: Confirm that the volume is mounted, writable, powered, and connected. Check that it has free space; do not assume an interrupted job can finish after the destination disappears.
- The encode is not finished by morning: Encoding may take hours, and no universal runtime can be inferred from video duration alone. Let it continue if the system is healthy, or test a shorter representative section and reconsider settings if completion time is critical.
- A queued job replaces another output: Use automatic naming that includes the title, and manually check that each queued job has a distinct filename and destination.
- A hardware option is missing: HandBrake may not detect supported hardware or the necessary drivers. Use an available preset rather than assuming acceleration is available.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different task—keeping an uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream—StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. It is not a video encoder or a way to perform this HandBrake encode. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
