To pause before a Puppeteer screenshot, await a JavaScript timer immediately before page.screenshot(): await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 2_000));. The number is milliseconds, so 2_000 waits two seconds. Puppeteer’s screenshot options do not include a documented delay option; the timer runs in your Node.js script.
Set a fixed delay before the screenshot
Navigate to the page, await the timer, then capture it. This complete example saves a PNG in the current directory:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 2_000));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Change 2_000 to the number of milliseconds you need: 500 is half a second, 1_000 is one second, and 5_000 is five seconds. The timer must be awaited; otherwise, execution can reach the screenshot call before the pause finishes.
Puppeteer documents screenshot capture through Page.screenshot() and its screenshots guide. Its ScreenshotOptions cover capture settings such as output path and full-page capture, but do not document a delay field.

Choose a wait that matches what the screenshot needs
A fixed sleep is useful when you know a visual change takes a predictable amount of time, such as a brief animation or a timed widget. It always waits the full duration, even if the page is ready sooner. If the required state can be observed, waiting for that condition is usually more reliable than guessing a duration.
| Wait strategy | Best for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed timer | A known, time-based change with no dependable readiness signal. | Always consumes the chosen time and does not prove the target state is ready. |
| Network idle | Waiting for a page’s network activity to quiet after navigation. | Network quiet does not establish that a particular widget or animation has finished. |
| Selector or page condition | Waiting for a specific element or observable application state. | Requires a selector or condition that accurately represents the content to capture. |
Wait for an element to appear
Use a selector that indicates the report or component you intend to capture:
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.waitForSelector('.report-ready', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
Replace .report-ready with a selector from the target page. Puppeteer also documents locators that wait for element visibility or stability, plus lower-level selector waits, in its page interactions guide.

Wait for a page condition
For readiness that is not represented by a selector, use page.waitForFunction() with a condition meaningful to the page:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteawait page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.reportReady === true);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
This example assumes the page exposes window.reportReady; replace it with a real, observable condition for your application. Puppeteer’s Page API documents waitForFunction() and waitForNetworkIdle().
Use network idle for initial loading, not visual certainty
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigating with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before capture:

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
This can help when the page’s initial network activity matters. It does not guarantee that client-rendered content, delayed updates, or animations have reached the exact visual state you want. Add a condition-based wait or a deliberate timer when the target requires one.
Capture a full page after waiting
Wait first, then set fullPage: true in the screenshot options:
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 2_000));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
fullPage is a documented screenshot option. For a long page, ensure the page content you need is present before capture; a timer alone does not confirm that lazy or client-rendered content has finished appearing. See Puppeteer’s screenshot options.

Timeouts and troubleshooting
Screenshot starts before the pause ends
Make sure the timer has await and returns a promise, as in await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 2_000)). Without the await, the script does not wait for the timer before continuing.
A delay option has no effect
Do not pass an invented delay property to page.screenshot(). The documented screenshot options do not list one; put the awaited timer before the screenshot call instead.
The screenshot is still missing content after the timer
A fixed duration is not a readiness check. If the content has a known selector or state, wait for it with waitForSelector(), a locator, or waitForFunction(). Network idle and animation completion are different conditions, so wait for the specific state that matters.

A condition-based wait times out
Puppeteer’s WaitTimeoutOptions documents a default timeout of 30,000 milliseconds for applicable waits and allows timeout configuration. That timeout is separate from the duration passed to JavaScript’s setTimeout. Check that your selector or condition can become true on the page, and configure the applicable wait timeout if the expected state legitimately takes longer.
Or skip the browser setup:
If you need a screenshot without writing and maintaining Puppeteer browser code, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one API request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
