AI suggestions may help you find moments, but they are not available in every country or language; timestamp and transcript selection are the documented manual options.
Make a highlight in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio → Content → Videos, then select the video you want to edit.
- In the video’s left menu, select Clips and Shorts, then choose Create clip or Short.
- Choose Short or Video clip, depending on the kind of upload you want to make.
- Select the passage using the transcript, if available: choose the relevant text and confirm it. Alternatively, set the start and end points on the timeline. If YouTube offers AI suggestions or a generated outline, use them to navigate the transcript, then check and adjust the selection yourself.
- For a Short, preview the result. Review any automatically generated captions; YouTube says their style and position can be customized, or captions can be disabled. Create a draft and finish the usual upload flow.
- For a video clip, you can add an eligible intro or outro, then create a draft and finish uploading. YouTube recommends linking the source video in the clip description.
The tool uses the source transcript for a Short’s auto-generated captions. Shorts created this way are automatically associated with the source video as a related video, except when the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids. YouTube Help explains the Studio workflow.
Choose a moment that works on its own
Look for a segment with a clear point rather than simply taking the first exciting stretch of the video. YouTube’s creator guidance recommends making Shorts enjoyable on their own, even when they also lead viewers to longer content. YouTube’s April 16, 2025 creator guidance discusses adapting long-form material for Shorts.
- For a tutorial: center the clip on one useful step or explanation. Keep any brief setup needed to understand it.
- For a conversation or podcast: retain the question or context that makes the answer intelligible; avoid a cut that begins mid-thought.
- For comedy or a story: include enough lead-in for the payoff to make sense, but remove dead time that does not help the moment land.
- For visually led footage: check the vertical crop and make sure the important person, object, or action remains visible.
YouTube recommends cropping for a vertical 9:16 frame and adding captions or text overlays when helpful. Preview the actual framing and captions before making the draft; a moment that works in the full-width original may not survive a tight vertical crop.

Know the difference between a viewer Clip and a creator-made Short
YouTube uses similar language for two different outcomes. A viewer-facing Clip is a short loop associated with the original video’s watch page; the Studio workflow creates a draft for a new Short or video clip from your upload.

The 5-to-60-second range applies to viewer-facing Clips; it is not a general recommended duration for Shorts. If you use the viewer Clips route, a creator who owns the source can convert the entire Clip into a Short. The workflows and outcomes are not interchangeable.

What to do if AI suggestions or the editor controls are missing
AI suggestions and outlines
YouTube lists AI suggestions and outlines for the Studio tool in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and for English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Availability may still vary by account. If the option is absent, select transcript text or enter timestamps manually.
More detailed edits
YouTube has announced Shorts editing controls for precise clip timing, rearranging or deleting clips, timed text and music, and previewing. Rollout and availability can vary, so do not rely on those controls being present in every account. If you need a separate phone-editing route, YouTube for Artists describes YouTube Create as a free app for editing Shorts and videos and uploading to YouTube, with timeline adjustments and voiceover. That is a separate option, not a prerequisite for Studio’s transcript-and-timestamp workflow.

YouTube’s creator guidance also recognizes editing software as an option for isolating and cropping moments. The specific capabilities and pricing of third-party apps vary; there is no single editor required for the Studio steps above.
Check the result before publishing
- Play the selection from its first frame: make sure the opening is understandable rather than an abrupt fragment.
- Check that the clip contains one coherent highlight and ends cleanly.
- Review the vertical crop, especially if the subject moves across the frame.
- Read the captions for transcription errors and confirm that their placement does not cover important visuals.
- For a video clip, consider linking the original video in its description. For Shorts made with Studio, check the related-video association and its exceptions for private, unlisted, or Made for Kids Shorts.
