To put a QR code on a looping YouTube Live product demo, generate an image that opens the product page, add it as an overlay in your encoder, connect the encoder to YouTube with your stream URL and key, then test the live preview for both scanability and placement. YouTube supports encoder-based streams with graphics and overlays; the exact overlay controls depend on the encoder you use.
Prepare and test the QR code
- Choose the destination. Use the product page or other specific page you want viewers to open. Check that the URL is correct and that the page works on a phone.
- Generate or export the code as an image. Save it in a format your encoder can add as a graphic.
- Test the code before adding it to the stream. Scan it with a phone and confirm that it opens the intended destination. A code that looks sharp on your computer may not be readable once it is scaled down in the stream.
Add the QR image to your encoder layout
Create or open the scene or layout used for the product demo, then add the QR image as an overlay or graphic. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports streams with overlays and graphics, but the precise steps vary by encoder. Check the current documentation for your chosen software rather than relying on menu names from another encoder. The OBS Project’s Help Portal is the place to check for OBS-specific guidance.
Place the code where it does not cover the product, demonstrations, captions, or on-screen controls. Make it large and high-contrast enough to scan from the likely viewing distance, and avoid putting it against a busy background. These are practical scanability considerations, not special YouTube placement rules.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Use the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube in your encoder’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this connection flow.
- Start the encoder’s preview or test output and check the completed layout before beginning the public stream.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it in the demo or share it publicly. If you need to replace or reset a key, use the controls in YouTube Studio and update the encoder to match.

Test the loop and QR code before going live
Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then review the preview on the kinds of screens your viewers are likely to use. Scan the QR code from a phone while the preview is playing; confirm that it remains visible, readable, and opens the right page. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live; see its encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
If your product demo is shown in more than one aspect ratio, inspect each version separately. YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live formats, and a QR code that works in one layout may be cropped, obscured, or too small in another. Its live-streaming guide covers the available formats.

Common problems and fixes
- The code is visible but will not scan: Enlarge it, improve contrast, remove visual clutter behind it, and test again on a phone against the actual preview.
- The code is cut off or covers the demo: Reposition it in the scene and re-check every output aspect ratio, not just the layout you edited.
- The encoder cannot connect: Verify that the stream URL and key match the active YouTube stream and are entered in the encoder’s connection settings. Consult the encoder’s own current help if the controls differ.
- The preview looks fine but the live stream has issues: Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the event and address any warnings shown there.
