YouTube’s documented tools let you check stream health in Live Control Room and read stream status through the YouTube Live Streaming API, but they do not document a built-in email alert for an encoder stream going offline. To receive email, monitor the authorized YouTube stream’s API status on your server, apply a persistence rule to avoid transient alerts, and send notifications through your own email system.

What you can—and cannot—set up in YouTube

YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics while streaming in Live Control Room (See your live stream’s metrics). Its documented workflow provides dashboard visibility; the materials cited here do not describe a native email-alert switch for an encoder stream going offline.

For an automated email, you need a monitor that reads the stream’s status and a separate mail service that sends the alert. YouTube’s API supplies status information; it does not send the email for you.

Choose the right YouTube status to monitor

Stream status: is YouTube receiving the feed?

A YouTube liveStream represents the video feed sent to YouTube. Its status.streamStatus can be active, error, or inactive. In the API’s terms, active means YouTube is receiving data through the stream; inactive means it is not; error indicates an error condition. For detecting loss of incoming encoder data, this is the primary signal to monitor. See Google’s LiveStreams API reference.

Broadcast status: is the viewer-facing event still running?

A liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch. It is distinct from the incoming feed. Use broadcast state as context—for example, to distinguish an intentional end from an unexpected loss of encoder data—instead of treating every completed broadcast as an outage. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.

Health status: are there configuration problems?

The stream’s status.healthStatus describes health and can include configuration issues and their severity. It is not the same field as streamStatus: a monitor can alert on missing incoming data, significant health issues, or both. Make the chosen policy explicit in the email so an encoder-feed outage is not confused with a configuration warning.

Set up API-based email alerts

  1. Authorize access to the channel’s live-stream data. Use an API client authorized for the creator’s YouTube account. The YouTube API’s liveStreams.list method retrieves matching stream resources and lets you request the status part. Its documented authorization options include read-only YouTube access.
  2. Identify the stream resource paired with the broadcast. Use the channel’s stream and broadcast information to select the correct liveStream. Do not assume a stream ID is interchangeable with a broadcast ID; they represent different resources.
  3. Schedule a check on your server. At an interval you choose, request the stream resource’s status and inspect streamStatus. Include healthStatus if you also want configuration-health notifications. The YouTube documentation does not prescribe a polling interval or guarantee how quickly a state changes after a disconnect.
  4. Define an outage and recovery policy. To reduce alerts caused by brief transitions, require repeated observations of inactive or error before sending an outage email. Clear the incident or send a recovery email when status returns to active. The number of checks, interval, and recovery behavior are operational choices—not YouTube-prescribed values.
  5. Send the email through your mail system. Use your organization’s SMTP server or transactional-email provider. Include the channel or stream name, broadcast identity if useful, observed status, observation time, and a link to the relevant Live Control Room. Keep API credentials secure and restrict them to the access your monitor needs.
  6. Use Live Control Room to investigate. YouTube’s dashboard checks the sent stream for errors and displays them beside the health indicator, with a timestamp and severity description. Consult Live streaming error messages after the alert to diagnose what happened.

Make alerts useful rather than noisy

  • Alert on the condition you actually care about: no incoming feed, a serious health issue, unexpected broadcast completion, or a defined combination.
  • Use persistence before notifying, then clear the incident when the monitored condition recovers. Tune these rules for the stream’s needs; YouTube does not supply universal thresholds.
  • Include timestamps and the last observed status so the recipient can distinguish a current incident from a delayed message.
  • Test intentional stops and reconnects before relying on the monitor. Confirm that an intentional broadcast end does not trigger an encoder-outage alert, and that a recovered feed closes or updates the incident.

Troubleshooting common alert problems

No email arrives

Check that the scheduled job is running, the API request is authorized and returning the intended stream, and the mail service accepted the message. Log API and mail errors separately; a failed status check is not proof that the stream is offline.

Alerts report the wrong stream or event

Verify that the monitor uses the liveStream resource associated with the intended broadcast. The feed and the viewer-facing broadcast are separate API resources, so matching or monitoring the wrong identifier can produce misleading results.

Every 10 minutes the most recent reading is updated on the online portal. Readings are stored on our servers for 1 year and can be downloaded anytime on a CSV file.

Brief reconnects trigger repeated emails

Review the persistence threshold and recovery logic. Require repeated inactive/error observations before opening an incident, and avoid sending a new outage message on every poll while the same incident remains open.

The feed is active but the dashboard shows a health issue

Check healthStatus separately from streamStatus. An active feed means YouTube is receiving data; it does not mean every configuration-health indicator is clear. Use the dashboard’s timestamped error details to investigate.

A third-party webhook claims to detect a disconnection

Confirm which platform owns the stream being monitored. For example, Mux documents a video.live_stream.disconnected event for a Mux live stream; that alone does not establish that it monitors a YouTube broadcast. See the Mux webhook reference and verify the integration’s scope before relying on it.
